Buying local - How much is it worth?

I agree with everybody else, but with a different spin. A tractor, unlike an automobile, goes in 'strange' places and does 'strange' things. Operated by a novice, they get even 'stranger'. It is gonna need service/repair, and there isn't a "tractor garage" on every corner. Your dealer will become your New Best Friend if you buy from him, and he may even pick up the machine for free when it needs work. To me, that alone is worth $400.

But what happens if that local dealer goes out of business or re-locates? Again if tractor is new, dealer will have to repair under warranty no?? How or why would not the dealer repair tractor brand they sell , if cost is covered under warranty

Repair, yes. But I don't think pick up and delivery are included under warranty. Correct me if I am wrong. A 70 mile round trip @$1-$4 a mile is coming out of YOUR pocket.

Exactly my point, if you are going to pay for delivery on warranty service repair work what's the difference on where you buy tractor, Local dealer or out of state dealer? I have two Kubota dealers with in 12 miles of me, both charge about $200.00 for pickup and delivery for any service work, even if you bought tractor from them. So if you could save $2000.00 or more dollars by purchasing out of state how do you benefit financially for buying local?

Yes, true, DevilDog, but the OP is talking about $400, not $2000. Some dealers will charge for a pick up, some won't.

Loyalty is a two-way street; customer loyalty to a brand, and dealer loyalty to his customer. Treat the latter well, and he will continue to buy his tractors and equipment from you, long after the first transaction is a distant memory. There is a truism in business that it costs a lot more money to get a customer, than to keep him.
There's a hot new book out that addresses this: The Thank You Economy, by Gary Vanerchuk, currently #33 on Amazon.

Agreed, I believe that much difference would totally change the equation for many of us.

I agree with some of the others posting here - in that - it's worth it to go with a local dealer. You establish yourself at a customer of theirs and start to build a relationship that might pay off at some point. Plus, I believe in patronizing my local merchants as much as possible to keep the local economy going. .....Just my 2 cents worth....

Buy local--if the local guy has a decent service and parts operation. Think ahead on needs for parts and services. Having a good relation with a local dealer is valuable. If you can't transport the tractor yourself, he'll probably split the cost of transportation if and when you need your tractor hauled to his shop as part of his customer satisfaction policy. And those costs will be lower for the local guy than for the out of state guy.

I would buy local. The local dealer has no control over sales tax. He has to charge it. In my State when I file my State taxes there is a line for sales tax on large out of state purchases. I would rather my dollars stay local. That said the only reason I would not buy local was if the local dealer was, for lack of a better word, scum. Which my dealer is NOT!
