I'm beginning to think about an oil/filter change on my BX1830
and I am wandering about taking out the filter. It looks like it will be hard to get a hold of to take out. Does the engine cover panel need to be removed and if so does the FEL need removed to get the cover out. I usually use filter pliers on oil filters but on the BX I don't think I can. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You do not need to remove the engine cover or the FEL.
Just reach up there with a pair of filter pliars to break it loose,
then spin if off with your hand. You may have to use your other hand to push back some of the wiring harnesses, but I changed mine that way with no problems at all.

P.S. That is of course assuming that the 1830 has the same engine cover as the bx-22, but I'm fairly sure they do. Do you see a half-moon cutout in the engine cover over the oil filter? That's why my bx-22 has.

I know my BX22 is a royal pain in the behind to remove the oil filter with panels on. I need to buy a filter wrench that fits onto a rachet.

I pulled the FEL and cover off mine when I did the 50hr, it just made the job much, much easier. It also opened things up more so I could clean any dripping from the old filter. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The fun one is the Hydro filter. Mine was sssooo tight that I about lifted the entire tractor off the ground before it turned. Kubota apparently does not put a film of oil on the O-ring when they do the initial assembly. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I also take the FEL & engine cowling off during scheduled maintenance. It allows for a more thorogh inspection and the ability to clean out those places you can't get to otherwise.

Both are very easy to R&R and doesn't add much more time to the maintenance task.

Hey, I say if you have the time and space, take the loader off and the side cover. Take a look around. However, it's not necessary. I will be doing my 6th engine oil change on My BX23 this week. I use a flat filter wrench. It is a metal, hinged circle that operates on the same principle as the strap wrench. I go in from the engine compartment. I have yet to run into any problems. The wrench is thin enough to just have a clear path up against the inside of the cover panel all the way to the filter. It is a bit snug for turning room on the wrench, but it doesn't take more than half of a full turn to loosen. Then I reach in like Mike C mentioned; from the outside. Spin it off by hand and have your pan under it. The engine oil change is really a ten minute job every 100 hours after break-in change. I posted a couple of photos of my strap wrench hereHope this helps /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Get a 3 clawed filter wrench a short 3/8 drive socket extension and a 3/8 drive socket handle.
With that removing the oil filter is a piece of cake.

Bought a Metal Filter Strap wrench in th 60's, fits everything, and nothing ever resisted. The "rubber" strap wrenches are nice and easier to use, but "whimpy"

Let me tell you, (and I can not emphasize this enough), ... Get a three fingered oil filter wrench from Sears that fits on to the end of a ratchet. This will go straight over the end of the filter and break it loose with no issue at all. So easy, and doesn't require the removal of the plastic cover.

Lesson 2:

Do not try to keep from making a mess. Just lay down lots of paper because oil is going to go everywhere. Trust me... 50 times easier to clean than to prevent.
