Ding, ding, ding!!!
You got it, though I think you cheated with as many times as you entered the contest. However, I will follow through with my end of the deal. Please email me at
dhaile@decaturelectronics.com with your address and I'll send it along. It is a tilt meter that looks pretty close to the ones that I've seen advertized on TBN - 45 degrees either direction.
The clue was when I drove into the driveway last night and noticed the gas can sitting in the location where I remembered setting what I was sure was the diesel can after I filled the tractor. It must the the Alzheimer's starting early. That's all I can figure.
I've learned that no matter how confident I am that I'll never make a stupid mistake, stupid mistakes will always happen. I just have to live with that fact. What makes it worse is that I would have grounded my kids for life if they had made the same mistake. I am truly thankful that it was I who made the mistake and not my 100% trustworthy boys.
I will be changing out my diesel can. I've been using a normal red gasoline can that I had spray painted purple on the sides and scribbled "Diesel Only" all over it with a magic marker. That is not good enough! I will purchase two 5 gallon yellow fuel cans this weekend. I expect that once I get used to using Yellow to fill the Kubota I'll be able to put my mind in neutral and dribble fuel all down my leg while I'm dreaming of the latest beachwear fashions.
The "damage to the tractor" question needs to be answered. The fuel that I drained from the tank was probably 75% gasoline. The tractor ran for at least 1.5 hours on that mix and ran fine up to 1/2 throttle. It did not smoke at all until I gave it full throttle and noticed something was weird. I blew out all the fuel lines and completely emptied the tank, then replaced with diesel. It still purrs like a kitten like it always did. I'm guessing that I did no harm at all to the engine but may have caused more-than-usual wear to the fuel injection pump. The only time it smokes is when I overload it in extra long grass and it is trying to catch up, just like it always did.
