Thats what I said. Guess I should be fixing instead of driving. Not as fun though.

I just ordered some filters from Tractorsmart (excelent service, highly recommmend), and mentioned my cracked trans case and the 40 hour labor quote to fix it. I asked how many hours he thought it should take to replace the part. He said that he could check how many hours Kubota would pay for if it was a warranty job. He got back to me in under an hour and said that Kubota calls it is an 8.9 hour job. Can anybody confirm this whith their dealer? Thanks.

Erik2005,
Take a picture of it and post it here. I'm sure it can be welded or brazed. We have one of the ex-president's of the AWS (American Welding Society) in our shop at least weekly or at the minimum once a month meeting with our welding manager. I'll have them look at the photo and make some suggestions on a weld procedure.

From our TBN Kubota dealer folks like "equipman", can you find out what the actual base metal is where Erik2005 has his leak and post it?

Erik2005,

I guess you may not have looked at that thread I referred to above...

Anyway, Walt posted the following there:

<font color="green">As promised, here is the rest of the story:

I picked up my tractor from the dealer on 24 Dec. 2002, just in time to plow the 9" snow that fell on christmas day/nite.

While the rear of the tractor was apart, I advised the dealer to also inspect the differential lock, which was not engaging.

The total bill for repair was $1304.00
This included the transmission case:$390.00
The differential lock was in pieces, and needed replacement. S-UDT, seals and O-rings added up to an additional $225.00.
The labor was $650.00, of which the dealer gave me a break, and charged 10 hours labor. I would imagine the job took 2x that time, as every part of the rear of the tractor had to be removed.

Hope this helps... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

When Ronnie from www.tractorsmart.com tells you something, you can believe him. He is both honest and knowledgeable. If he says 8.9, then you can go to the ends of the world and not find a discrepancy. He also ran a dealership for many years and is well versed in both parts and repairs.

I once cracked the tailhousing on a Ford transmission. Couldn't get the part on a Saturday in a small town 200 miles from home so I used a lead fishing sinker and a ball peen hammer and beat the lead into the crack, cleaned the area and put some epoxy over the whole thing and it held just fine.

BTW, the labor rate at Jasper Farm and Ranch in Jasper, Texas is $55 per hour. $85 sure sounds high to me.

I asked our service dept about BX transmissions repairs and they had replaced a damaged case some time ago. Using all the good pieces from the damaged case and moving them to the new case. The bill was in the $2500.00 range. It is hard to price a repair like this without seeing the crack though.

Equipman,

Why would it be difficult at all? The crack is slight and not the same concern as might be there if something poked a hole in the case and maybe damaged things inside, which apparently is not the case in this thread.

I would think it would straight forward...and take the same time and effort as would be needed to replace the housing even if it were not damaged at all.

Your point is well taken though...if the case suffered severe damage that might extend to internal components who could quote a repair price without seeing it or even taking it apart first?

That does not sound like the issue here though...

Equipman is right that without seeing the damage, we have no idea if it can just get welded and fixed.

I had an outboard that met a rock and dented the lower unit. Small dent about the size of a quarter that had a very small puncture. It would have been easy as pie to weld the aluminum case. Except it also happened to be right where the bearing cup was for the prop shaft. That little tiny dent was enough to screw the shaft/bearing alignment and trash the whole lower unit housing.
