Tractor
Kubota BX24
Yesterday, I was BBing a horse pasture that had plenty of rocks in it. It was a pretty rough job, with lots of jolts as the teeth would hit a rock and pull it out of the ground. After I got done, while loading the tractor on the trailer, I noticed that the brake pedal felt odd.

Normally, the pedal increases in resistance the farther you push it in, now it just goes right to the bottom of the stroke and bottoms out. The parking brake still holds it in place, but it sets all the way to the last notch on the parking brake set. I inspected the linkage, and everything seems to be in place right back to where it goes into the rear end. No oil anywhere. Anybody had anything remotely like this happen?

My warranty ends in May...

After a quick pressure washing, things are a bit cleaner, the only thing I can see is in the second and third photos, the silver area with the threads in it. Before washing, the internal threads were pretty clean, as if there was something screwed into it until recently. Any of you BX owners have access to look at their tracotr to see? Thanks.

The PDF parts list doesn't show anything to do with the brake in that area that isn't accounted for on my tractor...

Nobody???

The brakes on the BX's are pretty bad to begin with...Might be why there's no response. Nothing bent or disconnected. Don't know where to send you on this one.

I did a search, and only came up with one thread that sounded like a similar problem. But it dead ended with no solution

First of all, pressure washing?!? You can borrow my tractor anytime :D

Here are some pictures of my not-so-clean tractor. Hopefully these are helpful. (edit: I added one more at the end that I think shows that you aren't missing anything there)

Are you sure the adjustment sleeve did not loosen up and move???

Everything looks like it's been the way it is for awhile. I took it to my local stealer to have them take a look. I will post up what they find when I find out. It happened real suddenly, one minute I had fine pedal pressure, and the next the pedal went to the bottom.

Well, I just got off the phone with the shop, and it's looking like they have to tear the entire rear end down. He said it will be 2 to 2 1/2 weeks before they get parts ordered and in stock once they figure out what they need. That really sucks, I've got a couple jobs waiting for it.

On the plus side, they finally agreed to replace my hour meter that hasn't worked right since I bought the tractor.

Anyone want to ship their 'bota to Utah for a vacation? Free room and board...

Free room and board? sounds cool. The last time I went to utah, it gave me an excuse to buy the BX in the first place since my wife blew up the engine in a cheapo engine while I was there on business trip. Hmm gas expenses? It's a long drive to Utah from NYS. :(

I hope the repair was coverd under warranty :(

Service manager said it would be, he only ting he said I would be responsible for would be the brake pads if they were worn- there's no way they are worn, I never use the brake except when parking. I'm glad it happened when it did, my warranty runs out May 9.

Service manager called today with the lowdown. The brake pads/disks whatever they are were toast. He said that they had gotten so hot that they turns blue. This had to be from being maladjusted, as I hardly ever use the brakes. It was probably dragging like a partially set parking brake the entire time. I have to pay for the new brakes, about 75 bucks. The labor will be warranted.

Now get this, he said that my front hubs were leaking. Kubota sent out a memo to their service departments to pull any front ends with leaking hubs and install a brand new one-the entire front axle!!

I guess they want the entire assembly returned to them so they can troubleshoot it while it's still intact. So I get a brand new front end, brakes, and new tach/hour meter for $75. Not bad.

Hmmm, what would have happened if those leaking hubs were discovered after May 9? Could that have caused other problems, and would any of it have then been covered after that date? Sounds like your brake problem might have been a blessing in disguise.

Yeah, I thinking the same thing. Any body know what Kubota chargesfor their extended warranty? I think I'm going to look into getting it.

I had the same problem on my bx. On hilly terrain the trans whine is high whether brakes are set or not as the load from going up the grade with loader and bh was so great. The transmission easily overpowers the brakes and except for whine you can't tell it set.

I still cannot accept that I had left brakes on but could not come up with explanation other than that as to why my brakes crapped out.

One thing to look out for is trans leak after they are all done. This is major surgery for the transaxle and it took repeated trips back to shop, getting regional rep involved and taking it at my expence to a Kubota shop with several 'certified'(regional reps label) mechanics to get leak fixed.

Kubota loses significant money on these repairs because there is not brake set warning or interlock to prevent motoring while break is still set.

To anyone particulary a bx with this type of expensive to replace brake pad setup. Don't move tractor till checking to make sure parking brake is full off. You can hear the increased whine if on the level.
