Chain Storage Ideas Wanted

I usually leave my box blade on all summer and i keep a 35' chain wrapped around two of the scarifiers, I have used the tractor with this setup all summer and it has worked well for me.........Craig

I do the same thing.

I added a kid-size golf bag strapped to the inside face of the right loader column. I carry the chains there now. (Two 12 ft chains).
I just found a photo. Here I used the bag as a holster that wouldn't damage my cordless reciprocating saw, that I use to prune dead limbs in the orchard. Normally the two chains and my long handle pruners ride in there.

I recommend this, it works well.

California i dont think many on here will use your idea. I get the idea that many of these guys dont like the "hobo" look, as they buy brand new tractors wash wax and never let theirs be in the rain, as well as paint all implements at the first scratch. It is a good idea though.

I also think that is the very golf bag i have or use to have. I really dont remember as im sure i have not played golf in 8-9 years maybe less?

If Your tractor is anything like mine with having a FEL remote stick on the right side of tractor, I pretty much cannot use this side to mount or exit from the tractor, so anything I do or add to this area would not effect my ability to use the tractor, while visiting My neighbor who happens to be a Pro welder, He has a truck setup for mobile welding use and has everything nicely setup, I notice what he made to hold his welding cables and torch hoses, Looks very much like the picture I have sketched out, it looked to be a rather simply fabrication, Kinda like what you would wrap a lawn water hose around,;) You could either bolt it on or weld it in place, But In my thoughts this part of the tractor would be an area out of the way and easy enough to get to when in need of the chain, although would cause to have wrap and unwrap it from its holder,

If the tractor he wants this on is the one in the avatar there is no loader. I still can understand why he just cant wrap it around the front bumper?

Like I mentioned earlier far as mine is concerned I gave up trying to find some cool innovative way and simply put it in the tool box and it works just great makes life easy. :D

Hobo Look? Me? :D:D:D

I looked up this old picture to illustrate my chains wrapped around the hooks on my loader. But I guess it illustrates your point too!

I found that chains wrapped like this on the loader are a nuisance to untangle which discourages using them. It is a lot simpler to tug them out the top of my golf bag - they lift out without tangles ready to go to work. Any sort of vertical tube or bucket would serve as well.

For anyone interested in loader hooks: These are actually four 'cold shut' chain repair links, the largest size that a chain link will slip over. They work great as anchor points and don't bind up like a grab hook can. I've never bent one.

I wish these little tractors had space for a toolbox like you have. I've tried positioning various boxes, ammo cans, etc everywhere and there just isn't room. The area behind the seat on my YM240 has to be clear to leave room for the backhoe seat. On the little YM186D the lift arms raise so high that there's no space for a toolbox. (Also a box behind the seat would cover the transmission fill plug there). I have thought of a platform on top of the front suitcase weights, on the YM186D, but I can't find another space large enough for even an ammo can.

Hi guys....I put the original request out and I do have a loader and have welded hooks on to it where I have wrapped the chain around them, but they shake and rattle off. I also have wrapped them around my quick hitch with better success.

I think I am going the car doc route of installing a tool box behind the seat and between the rops vertical bars. The problem I am having is fab'ing something that doesn't involve drilling or welding to the bars. I am thinking of using some hose clamps that go through a couple of slices I can make in the tool box. Car Doc...did you weld brackets to your rops? if not how did you do it?

I know some people believe in chain only, but I find that nylon tow straps do the job for me and are much lighter and store easier.

Yeah I agree California they are somewhat limited w/o a ROP especially. I just mounted a tool box on my buddys 1610D (similar to a 186 I think) in between his ROP looked perfect cleared everything nice.

I thought I had it set in properly but a couple weeks ago he smashed it with the top link out tilling and somehow they went higher than I could get them to go in the shop probably hit a high spot so its back to the drawing board for him looks like we will mount it a few inches higher most likely or build an UP stop of sorts. (he was carrying his chain in there too)

I've got a few chains laying around in the cab of each of my tractors, pain in the butt usually. There's got a be a good solution out there. I'm not keen on pvc pipes. I used to love keeping chain in the slots on my logging winch when logging but don't have that on the tractor lately.

My toolboxes are both too small for tools never mind chain. Both my loaders have a hollow torque tube in the boom, maybe a couple of expanding rubber plumbing test plugs could let them stow some chain?

a toolbox would definitely be preferred ;) and is what I have on my tractor mounted on the rear of the fender, it holds quite a bit of junk, including a chain and the hose that would link the to hydraulic lines together, never know when I might have to drop the FEL:cool: Not sure if I ever post my toolbox but here it is and where I have located it on my tractor, I wouldn't see when having a deep enough toolbox why a chain and a few essential tools couldn't fit inside, the ammo case is also a good idea,

I drilled holes in my tool box and set it on top of the lower bar. I then used u-bolts to hold it to the rops. Your not suppose to drill a rops as it weakens it and could allow a rust location or spot for water intrusion.

Oh and for somereason i had in my mind petejudd was the OP. Thats why i kept refering to him and his grandson in the avatar. Sorry thats my fault as i guess i just never looked at the thread starter name each time i clicked it?

Here is a pic of my toolbox. Just an old metal one i found around the farm. The ply is just 3/4" that sets between the toolbox and the ROPS. As i was worried the old toolbox sheet metal would flex to much with weight in it and or be to thin possibly from rust. The Ply just gives it a solid base. All of it is clamped up with the nuts on the u-bolts being inside the toolbox and either another piece of wood in there or large washers to keep them from ripping through.

Hey Scotty on mine I drilled and tapped my ROP and used 3/8 course thread bolts and a piece of 2" angle across with 2 short pieces of 1" angle welded out @ 90 degrees to support the box and drilled thru the box into these to hold it in place with a couple bolts I will look for a pic.

On my buddys 1610D VN we ended up welding the bracket to the ROP I dont remember the reasoning behind that at this moment but that decision will haunt me here pretty soon as we have to re-do it.

On mine I had to move mine once also but it was real easy to just drill and tap 2 more holes up a little higher and that consequently gave me a place to put the tarp strap that holds my top link up when its not in use in the old holes hint hint.

Couldnt find a pic sorry if I think about it after work tonight I will go over to the ranch and take one for you.

Btw if you are worried about drilling and tapping the ROP I dont think its anything to worry about a couple 3/8 holes here and there wont weaken it IMHO someone else may have engineering degrees and say it will but as always ymmv.

hey california, i like the hobo look. never waxed a tractor and dont think i ever will.

Im no engineer, just repeating what i heard. Also if yours fails or something you will never sue if your hurt wont hold up in court. NO i dont worry about the sky falling.

Quit worrying about drilling or not. Just clamp it to the ROP with a square-end u-bolt from the hardware store or a couple of bolts with a steel strap between the ends.
