I thought about this a while. Went out and checked my LPGS and ROBB. Both units have ripper shanks.
I lower the shanks on both units enough so that they will be digging while the implement is dead level. As a matter of fact - that is the way the manufacturer recommends. No tip, tilt or angle. If I wanted shanks only - I can roll the ROBB and have that. I could raise the LPGS so the only thing touching the ground would be the shanks. That would NOT BE a good way to operate the LPGS.
Most implements with rippers are NOT designed to be used with rippers only. The basic implement alone or with rippers down. My ROBB is the exception.
