Clearly stated:3130 underpowered! More than once

He'd have to increase the three NipponDenso injectors diameter to match the fuel to the doubled airflow, keeping the entire fuel injection event within the permitted crank angle window. Installing new shorter pistons to decrease the compression ratio would also be required otherwise the maximum operations combustion pressure will either crack the head, the block, or shorten the rods....
Of course, operating any diesel at any elevation under a heavy load for any length of time is guaranteed to cook the pistons and exhaust valves though.

Now Ramon, that is what I call a good response. I would like to see this resolved for your sake obviously. Just a side note, when folks haul their boats up to Tahoe for vacations, they find their sea level perfoming boat is no longer capable of even pulling up a skier etc. The altitude really affects performance. You are only at 4200 but even that makes my old IDI non turbo smoke.

I sit at 6500 feet and yet I have no idea how much the elevation is affecting my "perceived power" This is because I have never run the tractor at sea level. If I did maybe I would be amazed and maybe not. I guess what I am trying to say is that even if the elevation is affecting the power of the tractor I can't believe that this is the cause of all Ramon's problems. Remember in the beginning he compared the power to that of his B2400. Now assuming (deadly I know) that he had the B2400 on the same property at the same elevation, then the elevation has no bearing on the comparison.

I don't know if this post made sense but it is something that has been eating at me since I first saw the reference to elevation. Since the whole discussion here seems to revolve around Ramon's perception of how much power the L3130 tractor should have then the elevation would only have an effect if he had moved from sea level after purchase but prior to delivery...and he said the dealer was at the same 4200 foot elevation so I think even that argument is discounted.

HP drops off 3% every 1,000 feet of elevation specifically due to the fact that the air pressure drops the same amount, if fuel delivery is not reduced, black smoke.

This happens to all normally aspirated engines, diesel or gasoline. unless they have a turbocharger to compsensate for the pressure decrease at altitudes.

Sky Pup,

I wasn't...or at least didn't mean to imply that the power loss due to elevation was not real. I believe it and have experienced it myself when we first moved here from near sea level.

I merely meant that since I have never driven my tractor at any other elevation than 6500 feet, I have no idea what the powerloss "FEELS" like. Does that make sense??

That being the case, I was wrong in my previous post about the elevation not being pertinent in Ramon's perception of his powerloss. That was a wrong statement and I acknowledge it as such. Anything that causes a loss of power whether real or imagined is pertinent to Ramon's perception of power or lack thereof.

As I suggested at the end of my post, I freely ignored my ignorance in favor of hearing myself type.

What is even stranger is that he clearly stated that he just dynoed his PTO a couple of days ago and it is in fact putting out the exact same horsepower as it would have if it were at sealevel with no decrease in power from the altitude? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

This being the case, he has proven 100% beyond any shadow of a doubt that indeed his specific L-3130 is in fact OVERPOWERED. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

He should return it to the dealer ASAP and demand that they decrease the power of that beast immediately.

That's true so apparently the 4200' altitude is not having any affect on the power.

I'm new at this dyno stuff. Is it typical for a dealer to have a dyno? I'm pretty sure mine does not. He does however inform his customers better then Ramon's dealer.

Excellent point Skypup!

Our turbo discussion is now moot. Maybe this excessive power is causing the tires to spin and loose forward momentum. Could his cab be restricting his vision of the spinning tires? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Rat,

Used to eat at the Squeeze Inn all the time.

I lived in the first house on the left going up Spring Street. Walk right into town. I miss Truckee...what a sportsman's paradise that place was/is.

20% loss of power at Ramon's altitude.....

Ramon....go for the turbo JD.
