Sounds to me like the Beast is Jealous of the new Cat you brought home ( as well as I ) seriously though , my ls would do the same thing , start fine 1 time then clickety click click the next , turned out to be the ground connection had loosened up ( gremlins I guess )
Moral of my story , check the simple **** first ! KISS principle you know !
Good luck
Scott
After working on the Cat the last two weekends, it was nice to fire up the Big RED Beast. I unloaded a 48 inch cleanout bucket for the Cat with her. She's a sweetie. I don't mine working around and on her with her idling. Not so much with the Cat idling. No safety lock. Controls are "hot" all the time at idle.

I took my starter off my 4110 Sunday, took about two minutes. The solenoid attaches with two screws that are easier accessed with the starter off. Replaced the solenoid and starter is good as new.
Keith,
Is your starter installation tight like this.......... Big RED Beast Starter Installation 2.jpgBig RED Beast Starter Installation 1.jpg

Sorry im just jupping into this someone prolly has asked but you are sure your getting 12v from the battery to the solenoid/starter right? And I mean checking voltage at each point like wire connection and starter post?

It is pretty tight with the loader on. My side panels come off easy, and I used a couple of extensions on my ratchet to give me space. I definitely had to remove the starter to change the solenoid.

Bummer,
Hopefully I won't have to do that.

After getting the Cat out of the barn and cleaning it's dirt trail up, I changed my fuel filter and oil and filter on my truck. Then I went to bring the 6520 in the barn and see what was going on. Well, it cranked right up with no problems. Knowing you can fix it if it isn't broke, I let it run a while and put the Cat back into the barn. Guess it was just a glitch from the heavy rains we had.

One way to check if it is the starter is have someone tap the side of the starter with a hammer while you try to start it. If tapping with a hammer causes it to spin right over or spin faster it is the starter. If no change in symptoms it could be a solenoid or a battery/connection issue. Has it suddenly gotten colder there? That could indicate a weak battery. Also, check your alternator output with a volt meter to see if you are getting at least 13.8 volts. 13.8 to 14.2 is good. I've been getting flamed elsewhere in the forum for even suggesting hitting a starter with a hammer. However my Ford F350 died on the interstate and my 3lb sledge got it going, several times until I could get the starter replaced.
It does work sometimes, just don't wail on it and break something.

If you can get a load tester on it check it out. My M4700 gave me the same click, click, click. Tried the hammer, no result. Charged the the battery and charger said it was fine. Still the click. Since the battery was old I pulled the battery, took it to NAPA. They put a load tester on it, looked good on first test, weak on second. Replaced the battery, Fires right up.

Meanwhile try to park so you can jump it. I would have needed 30' of jumper cable so I didn't even try it.

Percussion adjustments are standard in any mechanic's tool box. I don't care if they tell you they don't..............at some point in their careers.............they have used a hammer to fix it. I always use the wooden handle of the hammer when I need to wack something.

I always park where I can jump any vehicle I have. I always back my dually into parking places, for various reasons. My daughter is finally beginning to see my reasoning in this.

Uh, yeah.....I know what cold is. Cold is 33 degrees, raining with 100 percent humidity;) and your in the deer blind trying to realize why you got out of that warm bed.

What cold isn't.........................20 degrees below zero in Fairbanks with 18 percent humidity!

you forgot the 25mph steady wind as well... now that's cold.

Not cars or tractors, but use percussion adjustment alot at work. Relay, output on PLC card, contactor...etc. If they stick, sometimes a little tap works wonders.

Sometimes it never happens again. If it gets more frequent the component gets replaced
