You might think you do, but if it ever happens, you'll hope it never happens again.

You may be right. One never knows what they'll REALLY do until the Moment of Truth but, knowing me, it wouldn't take much for me to be like one of them fools you see whooping and hollerin' chasing them 'nadors of TV.

I'm gettin' all excited just thinkin' 'bout it!!!

Wooo Hoooo!!!

I've only seen the one tornado close enough to terrify me, but I've been to the scene of some shortly after they happened and it's hard to comprehend just what they can do without seeing it personally. The last one was in Navarro County on S.H.31 about 9 or 10 years ago. A double wide mobile home, properly installed and anchored, was blown away. Across the driveway, no more than 25 or 30 feet from the house was a shed with some rabbit cages and rabbits and a horse and they were munching away contently, untouched. But the mobile home (manufactured house) and the family in it was another matter. Two little boys, 10-12 years old, were left sitting on the ground in the front yard, only a few feet from where the house had been. The mother was found a couple of hundred yards away, on the other side of a creek, in serious condition, but survived. Both boys went to the hospital and one was ther quite awhile, but both survived. The father's body was in the creek. The twisted metal frames from under the house were found a couple of hundred yards away. But other than those two frames, I did not find a single piece of the house or furniture that was 2 feet long. That tornado didn't just tear the house apart, it shredded the house and all the contents. And nothing else anywhere in the county was damaged that day.

Along the coasts of Fl it is not uncommon to see "waterspouts" (funnel clouds) snaking down whenever thunderstorm conditions are present...they're usually much thinner/narrower than the huge, wide ones that are tornadoes in the mid West...many times you will see multiple spouts at the same time...

They don't always reach the water but they do sometimes and can reek havoc on boats or anything in their path...they usually collapse if/when they make a landfall... compared to the huge (funnel) clouds like in the picture...waterspouts are more like giant "dust devils" but they still need to be respected as a force of nature that can be harmful...

usually when there are waterspouts...there is also severe lightning close to the beaches...which brings up the subject of "fulgarites"...fulgarites are what is formed when lightning hits the beach...the electric charge going into the sand causes the silica to melt forming (basically) glass formations that can be dug up...people actually sell them to collectors etc...

I've seen some small waterspouts, but don't recall ever seeing a fulgarite.

Well, Bird, try Reese Witherspoon in the film "Sweet Home Alabama", and you'll learn the Hollywood version of that phenomenom. Anyhow, 3 years ago I was sitting in my "city home" and the sky got black and the wind speed picked up, so I turned on the Weather Channel and learned that a tornedo had touched down in an area on the coast just north of Charleston - my country home location. Not a good feeling - so I hopped into my pickup and sped there. Sure enough and consistent with Murphy's Law, a waterspout had come inland for a couple of miles before turning back out to sea, and it had crossed my property - 2 large and old oaks were on the ground and a huge number of branches from other trees. However, my garage/apartment, built to 150 mph specs, was intact. Took me all weekend to cut up the trees and haul such and other debris to the county dump.

Nope, never want to have another tornedo or waterspout anywhere near me or my property. I feel similarly about hurricanes, which is why my garage/apt is 20 feet above mean high water - still, if Mother Nature gets real upset, I'm toast, just like everyone else.

I've been hit by "dust devils" and enveloped by "dust storms", I cannot imagine the sheer power of a tornado. I hope one day they figure it out.

It's good that the NWS and our local stations can give somewhat advanced warnings.

There just a part of life where we live . We have been lucky so far this year & have dodged several funnels that were within miles before going back up , 5 in the last few days . North & east of us wern,t near as lucky .

But Whats almost as bad are the Straight line winds ( inland Huricane ) that come before or after the storm fronts , Those We haven,t been so lucky with & still cleaning up from & doing repairs . Bob
