Confusing Operator\'s Instruction Book

I recently preformed the 50 hour service on my GC2300 and
found some of Massey Ferguson's information to be a little confusing.

In the "Lubrication & Maintenance" section it makes reference
to Hydraulic Fluid, and Hydraulic Oil.

The book says that Hydraulic Oil goes in the Rear Housing
as well as in the 4WD Axel.

I wonder if the author of the instruction book knows there is a difference?

Just put Permatran in both places and you should be all right. If you think Masseys is bad you should see some of the other companies manuals. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

That's what I did. The fluid in the transmission was clear, but the front axel fluid on the left side had a brown-grey color to it and the right side was black.

I allowed both sides to drain until it no longer dripped, then I poured fluid through the axel until it ran clear.

That should take care of it until the next time. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Carl,
Something isn't right there. If that size is like the larger sizes, it should have the same color coming out of both sides. I would take some of the fluid out of the front axle in both places when you get a few more hours on it to check it. If there is still a difference, speak with your dealer.

Re: Confusing Operator\'s Instruction Book

Thanks Jerry, I'll do that.

I saved the fluid from each side, separately, so that I could take it to the dealer for their opinion.

The fluid from the left side, which was low compared to the right side, was a brown/grey color and had some milky color to it also, as if it may have contained some water. I shined the inside with a light to see if there was any rust, but didn't see any.

I haven't had the extra time this week to go to the dealer, but I am off tomorrow and plan on working it into my schedule of honey-do's.

One of the worst things to ever happen to "the average joe mechanic" is when a manual is written by a staff of highly educated, very knowledgable engineers, who know of every detail on the subject they're writing.

THEY KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TRYING TO SAY....

Just those of us who AREN't so smart can't decipher what the manual says.

Putting instructions in "laymans terms" is a gift. Those of us who have Massey's know of Big Dean (quite fondly too I might add) He has that gift. He can tell you how to fix your old MF, and in terms we can all understand. I've mentioned to Dean a few times he could have been a college professor instead of a tractor mechanic. When "teaching", it's less important knowing a great deal about a subject and MORE important to know how to relate that knowledge to your students.

And apparently, who ever proof-reads some of these manuals DOESN'T have that gift.

In other words, you can understand the message as long as you already knew what the manual said and DON'T NEED THE MANUAL IN THE FIRST PLACE.
