Connect-Under-Pressure, Breakaway Quick Connect

One of my 3rd function quick couplers failed and needed to be replaced. So I decided to look a break-away option because I have come close to accidentally dropping front implements with the hydraulics attached.

I change implements frequently and currently had to turn off the tractor to relieve pressure and cycle the elctro diverter. I also have to constantly fight to keep the QDs clean as I do a lot of dirt work with the loader.

I came across this Parker product which normally sells for $280 but Blain's Farm and Fleet has it for $130 somehow.

-Push or pull one handed to connect or disconnect (ISO 5675 2way mounted couplers).
-Built in shut-off ball valves.
-Built-in sealed automatic dust covers with gaskets to keep out dirt even when connected.
-A drain hole to weep the small amount of hydraulic fluid that escapes with disconnects.
-A clamp bar

It's really slick.

I had to bed the clamp bar to about 80deg for my application.

It was super easy to install (1/2" NPFT).

While I was at it I switched my plugs to a pressure-relief design to relieve pressure build up in my implements line due to temperature swings. You can see the little pre-valve ob the very tip of the poppet (we'll see it these fail easier). But no more fighting the residual pressure ever!

This is definitely a luxury set-up but man is it nice!

Thanks- all very interesting, and looks like a great idea, especially for someone like yourself, often changing attachments. I hadn't seen those plugs with the pre-relief feature. Cool. Hopefully, they shouldn't give you any problems. These are not "break-away" or am I missing something??

Yes, yank on a hose and it disconnects and seals.

My samurai hedge trimmer arrived and the dealer is willing to attach a 3rd function valve on my 2007 Kubota B7800. However he is quite a ways from here and I think I have the skills to install it myself. I just need detailed instructions on how to go about it. Any help is always appreciated. Hal

I have those relief valves on the aux circuit of my deere but never understood them. There is a small hole, that I have never seen a drop of oil come out (not that the tree huggers at deere would allow that). So how do they work?

Deere's may function differently but these have a secondary, smaller valve within the popet itself with a smaller surface area (so more PSI when you push on it with the female QD). It relieves enough pressure to depress the larger poppet valve.

I thought the handle I see in the picture was the pressure relief method. That's what the dealer told me, as I have two of these valves on the 3rd function. My rear couplers are those hellishly complicated (no collar to retract) type. Just press in.

The easiest way that I know of to uncouple the no collar type coupler is to push in and then pull out all in one quick motion. They come out quite easy using this method.

The levers are just ball valve shutoffs.

The quick connects that came with the remote kit for my L4330 are marked "Pioneer 8010-4". They have a spring-loaded collar that releases the locking balls inside the coupler, but it has a devilishly strong spring. And the collar is covered by the remote mount. If these are supposed to be "just push in", it would take godzilla to connect them! I assume the same to disconnect. And this is without any hydraulic pressure, which will make it worse. Any tips for how to connect and disconnect them?

My first guess is that you do have residual pressure (on either side of your connection).

However, if they are two-way QDs (as it sounds by your description) you should be able to pull on the tractor side hose, 'behind' the female QD, while pressing the male QD in. This might help the connection.

A picture would help me and hopefully other, more experienced members, will comment.

On our L3830, we have some quick connects that are a VERY tight fit in the OEM quick connects and others that pop right in. All are Pioneer quick connects, no real rhyme or reason why one works and another doesn't.
They are not however, connect under pressure (as far as I know). The easiest way to get them to connect is to shut the tractor off, then move the levers back and forth to relive the pressure.
If either side has pressure, good luck getting them to connect.

i just bought 2 sets of these as i get extremely frustrated trying to change out my grapple.
they are on sale for $99.99 right now.
the problem is this.
my Massey 1440 uses the same size larger couplers as come in this kit but uses a male and a female...this kit is 2 females.
my Kubota M6060 uses the smaller size couplers as well as a male and female.
i was trying to put 1 on each tractor to move the grapple between the 2 tractors as needed.
any suggestions?part numbers would be greatly appreciated.

So you tried putting the male coupler in without the female being mounted?? This would be extremely difficult. I believe that the female side needs to be installed before you are going to be able to couple them. You are talking about this type of coupler, correct? :confused3:

No worries, it should be easy to make this happen and I'll give it my best shot at helping.

As I recently discovered, the only breakaway QDs must have the female QD attached to the tractor. So I just switched all my attachments to have two male QDs. I marked these male QDs with red or yellow electrician's tape (the valves you bought are similarly color coded). This way you don't mess with which operator input opens or closes your grapple.

The Pioneer valve sets you bought need your grapple to have to male 1/2" 'pioneer' style QDs. A 'pioneer' style is like saying Xerox. Many manufacturers, including Pioneer make these connectors to a common industry standard called ISO 5675 with 1/2" body. These almost always have female 1/2" NPT (pipe threads) for the hose to connect to. Your grapple hose may already terminate in 1/2" male NPT threads otherwise you will need an adapter.

Your kubota 3rd fxn kit comes with a different ISO standard QDs (ISO 7241-1 series B). I just switched everything over to iso 5675.

So at a minimum you'll need 3 male 1/2" 'pioneer' QDs. Available at your local TSC or similar. You will also need several adapters. For my kubota I think I needed two 3/8" female JIC to 1/2" male NPT to hook up the breakaway valve. You may need no adapter to put the valve set on your Massey. For your grapple my guess is you'll either need no adapters or two 3/8" female npt to 1/2" male npt. All should be readily available.
