Cool Nature Photos

While deleting old photos in our new HD, I spied these pileated photos taken on our front porch. These guys will only come to suet feeders in the spring, when they're running out of food in the woods. What a strange, strange looking bird.

We have these come through here in waves. They are huge compared to the downy WP. Nice picture, mine never come out since they move around the trunk so fast and the hammer sound is pretty loud!

In all my 38+ years out here - only one pileated woodpecker. Scads of Downy( sap suckers ) and flickers. I saw the big 'ol pileated for only a brief time - then he was gone. I think he must have been lost. The flickers will peck on the pines to get bugs. The Downy will peck on the telephone poles to sound off.

I'm building outdoor stairs right now and this spider appears. I've never seen anything like it, lived in Virginia 68 years.
It would walk a little then jump. I took lots of pictures, then it looked at me. I guess it got tired of me and jumped on my face!
I ran in the house screaming like a little girl. 20200611_132343.jpg20200611_132644.jpg

I've got the "normal" spiders and the occasional Black Widow. Nothing, ever, like that little dude. Have you tried to ID it?

I think I posted these on this thread earlier, but seemed timely to do it again.

I leave the dead poplars standing for them, I saw one a couple of weeks ago on the ground pounding away on one of the stumps in my yard!

Yes I looked but couldn't find one like it. It was under these stairs I was building.
That wolf spider was in our living room last winter. We have loads of spiders in Virginia.20200611_205009.jpg20200611_205031.jpg20190914_220419.jpg

I like wolf spiders...they don't make webs and they eat other (more dangerous) spiders...!

lol....that's funny, I just saw one of these the other day too, and thought WTF?? Never seen such a thing before. He was on my shed door. Reminded me of the black jumping spiders always hanging out in the mailboxes. Like it mutated or something....

Took these photos out my front window this morning. So far we have seen five fawns on our place this year. Two of them are twins.
We see them nursing occasionally but seldom when we have a camera on hand.

Whitman's jumping spider?

   / Cool Nature Photos #780
Speaking of spiders, this odd little fellow came to visit today. Kinda crab-like in appearance, with long (relatively..) front legs.

This is one of the culprits when you see spider webs seemingly coming from no where floating around. This little guy, when he's ready to go, will arch his little behind up in the air, and let a stream of web shoot up into the breeze, until it catches something, then off he goes. I followed one web string a good 50ft before I lost sight of it.

His body is only about 1/4" long, so he's tiny, but quite fascinating to watch.
