I have a JD 4010 diesel and need help selecting the correct size attachments. I got a post hole digger from JD with a 6-inch auger. Can I use an 8-inch auger? Also, if I get a rotary cutter, can I get a 6-foot or do I need to get a smaller one. I am unclear if it just means I will have to go slower with the larger mower/auger or if I am unable to use them.

Welcome to TBN:D

If your 4010 is the 18 HP compact, and not the 80-90 HP Ag tractor, then a 6' cutter is to big for your machine. You only have about 16.5 PTO horsepower available to you and about 900lbs. of lift at the 3PH. You will need a 4' cutter, possibly a light duty 5" unit if all your cutting is grass, you'll need to watch the weight though...

A 8" or 12" auger will work fine for you depending on your soil conditions (rocks, clay, ect.)

I have a teeny, tiny 16 HP ford landscaping tractor and it will just about swing a 48" bush hog mower. There is actually a smaller one available (42") but it is a special order from my local supplier. I'm sure no expert, but I wouldn't go any bigger than 48" with a small tractor unless you have lots of time (I'm retired).
