How many of you have ever been outside, at night, with a few beers in you, and a couple raccoons get to fighting 30-40' away from you?

You think its the Sasquatch coming to get you and run like heck!

We've had them unofficially in Maine for over 30 years. I say this because I've seen them--personally--in broad daylight running across route 9. As a passenger/adolescent with my Dad, and as the driver with my son. Tail 2/3 the length of the body--shaped like a leopard/jaguar rather than a domestic/bobcat shape. I don't get out much either, so if I've been fortunate enough to see two, over thirty years apart tells me I'm either the luckiest guy in Maine, or there is an active enough breeding population that people are spotting them regularly. I'm not sure it would even be enough to bring a cougar corpse to officials to confirm.

For years around here, pics have popped up, DNR said that they weren't around, in order to protect them. In these part's, every other bubba in the country would be trying to find the Endangered cat to kill it.
Recently, as far as we know, they have been restocking them in the Smokey Mtn Natl Park, they will be protected should they stay there.
I hope they take, as mentioned already, there are a lot of ferral animals that need to be depleted. For years, DNR was taking problem bears out of the Natl Park & relocating them to another about 2 hours east of us, most would find their way back to the Park, in recent years they have been sighted within 30 minutes to an hour of where we live.
Years ago, there were bear sightings West of us on a regular basis, one was finally killed, found out it was a problem bear that was being hauled from ARK to New Mexico & the transporter decided he could make more money by dropping them off in TN, wonder how that worked, you'd think he'd have to contact NM DNR upon delivery & release:confused3:

DNR said there were no mountain lions in Kansas and Missouri till several were road kill and DNA testing proved they were wild not released.
Look for tracks and listen for their cries.

Live in North Central Indiana. We just cut the weeds down in the field. When I was mowing the actual lawn last night I think I saw a Cougar come out of the woods into the field and check things out. Then she went back in the woods.

Live in SE Indiana. Lions and Tigers and Bears ... OH MY! Report of a Black Bear spotted in southern Indiana recently. Apparently swam across Ohio River from Kentucky. Need to upgrade my concealed carry from .22 to .357!

Not unlike many other territorial species, as populations go up the excess will seek new territory because they are no longer welcome in the home range. Bears, wolves, coyotes and bobcats come to mind. We have had confirmed sightings of cougars in Wis but I think they were merely rogue males "passing through". I expect that with time we will get some breeders.

When we lived in Navarro County, TX, I met one person who claimed to have seen a mountain lion and heard of a couple of others who claimed to have seen one. And one elderly lady who lived alone had a full grown ram in a pen and she found it's remains one morning some distance from the pen, no open gate, no fence damage, etc. She claimed it had to be a cougar to be able to jump the fence with that ram. Some believe; some don't, and I don't really have an opinion. I KNOW that I saw a bobcat less than half a mile down the road from our place once, and I found a dead one in the road about 10 miles from the house that I assume was hit by a car or truck. But I've not seen any cougars.

Mountain LION is a bit of a misnomer as they are not of the Panthera genus (lion, tigers, jaguars) , unlike those they cant roar and their heads (and jaws) are not as large in relation to their body.

Funny as it may seems cougars are much more like our house kitties than the truly big cats.
