Yesterday while walking our 4 dogs through the hayfield our chow mix Rusty became seperated from the group as he often does. While the rest of us continued on we heard Rusty yipping, yelping and barking furiously. I thought he encountered a skunk or worse a porcupine, then we see him running for all he was worth with a rather large deer in close chase. I hollered at Rusty and the deer froze allowing him to escape his charge. He was ok other than his pride being hurt, no doubt our maniacal laughter didn't help his physce any. I was unable to determine the gender of the deer as I didn't see any antlers, but it was of good size. The funny thing is Rusty is usually the one doing the chasing, he runs after them for 50 yards or so then comes back triumphantly. It was different this time:)

Too funny! It'll be interesting to see what his reaction is the next time he sees a deer.

Congelo nos opus, quantum punitor ingravesco ?

Thats hilarious! It reminds me of my nosy stubborn Dachsund that decided he was going to run across two properties to chase that animal that was in the nieghbors fence. When he got up to that horses feet and realized how big it was he changed his mind real quick and made a quick retreat as the horse chased him back out of the fence. Needless to say he never did that again.

my brother was down on the property working on his dirt bike path and heard a big commotion the beagle of his was there and she was hollering howling like crazy, he went over there to find her trapped in/under a large wild rose/multi-flower rose bush by about 3 or 4 big momma turkeys! she sounded like she was dieing in there! lol. the turkeys saw him & flew off pretty quick and the dog hot footed it back next to him & wouldn't leave his side rest of day! :)

needless to say we got a kick out of it :D

I hope he wasn't chasing those high dollar Tennessee Walkers!
I thought those hotdog dogs were supposed to chase stuff into a hole, better have a talk with him.:)

I heard Rusty barking at something pretty good, sounding especially ferocious as he gave him the business from the sanctuary of the front porch. He opted for the long range bark with the angry, brooding look. I haven't seen him go after one yet, but the night is still young.:)

Yeah that was what he was after. The best horses money can buy...Hadn't you heard? LOL

That wiener dog has scurried in more ground hog holes than I can count and barked for what seemed like hours. All I could do was wait on him to get tired and come out in most cases. He never has managed to get one though. Probably a good thing.

Funny. The B/C cross likes to get the highlanders to chase her like a game (at least to her). She just looks back and makes sure she is not getting too far ahead so they lose interest. According to the 4 wheeler she can do about 24 mph in a sprint and average 18 for miles.

Up here it is legal to shoot a dog chasing a deer, any time, any where. Wonder if that works the other way around? Prabably have to have video showing need to protect before any one else would believe it!!

On the flip side i have been almost gored by a white tail buck when i got between him and his girlfriends. He was tasty (yes it was in season and all other prerequisites met).

When I read the title, my mind read "Deer-chasing dog." I thought this was going to be a thread on dog training. I had to read it a couple of times to realize it was actually a deer chasing a dog. :D

I have also had the misfortune of being charged by a deer. On one of our walks the dogs had flushed a baby and a very large mama deer from a thicket where they were taking a siesta. The baby was somewhat clumsy and fell down the creek bank as the mother came straight at my wife and I at full speed. She did a little zig zag maneuver and ran right between us missing us by inches. I'm sure it would have flattened us with a direct hit. It happened so fast I couldn't even think about taking evasive action, just kind of stood there with that "human in the headlights" look on my face.
