Did Your Salesman Point Out The HST Fan On The BX?

Never mentioned a word about it other to say BX is a low ground clearance tractor and to be careful.

I'm certain the Brotek shield has prevented damage on my BX...

I have a lot of brush... or did when I first got the BX. A few times long twigs still have made it to the fan without damage.

There is a right tractor for every job. We do not recommend a sub compact for this reason to people who are headed to the back forties or woods! We do like to sell up at this point.

That's the approach I would take. My opinion on subcompacts is, if you don't have a MMM on it, you need to upsize. They simply are not well-suited for the rougher aspects of tractor duty. And this holds for all brands that I have seen first-hand.

I bought my BX24 in 2006 and it never came up. I lost all but two fan teeth this spring when clearing for a new driveway. Kubota wanted something like $475.00 to change the $9 fan. My auto mechanic carefully cut the remaining teeth, made that fan symmetrical, cut the new fan and glued it over the original and added a band as a safety precaution. He then fabricated a skid plate out of some airplane aluminum he had. Oh and he changed the hydraulic fluid and filter. All of this for $180.00. Considering the price of the Brotek half skid plate (~$350), I thouht I made out pretty well.

Wasn't pointd out to me but I was already aware through my research here on TBN and knew the preventative fix was available. (Bro-tek plates.) Other than that, the tractor fit my needs and preferences better than other makes and models so the fan vulnerability didn't deter me.

I think your approach is just the way I feel about the subcompact tractors. I have a BX2360 and use it for the jobs it's best at. Mowing, snowblowing with a front mount blower and light duty loader work. When I read what some do with this tractor it just puzzles me why they made that choice given the next model up(B2320) would be much better and after skid plates and other modifications not much more $ and thats's without breaking a fan. I also have a L3130. Without the use of a larger tractor the subcompact would not be a good choice for an everything tractor. As for my salesman anyone that read the sales book would have better knowledge of the product.

As you likely know, the B2320 is only about $500 more than the BX2660. No, it doesn't make sense, at first blush for someone to get the top end BX, have to buy a skid plate and then go about using it conditions where more ground clearance would be helpful. Further, for that extra $500, the "extras" are lengthy. 3 speed range, larger transmission, greater FEL and 3 pt capacities, larger wheels/tires, lower RPM operation, etc.

So, it's a no brainer, right?

Not quite that simple. Regardless, some folks prefer the smaller, over-all package. They want the BX, flat out and that ends the comparison and that conversation, while related and pertinent, is a bit of a side chat.

My purpose in asking the original question was a straight forward wondering. How many folks were informed at the time of their BX purchase? It seems to be running only about half. I find that very interesting.

Exactly, I choose the BX2660 over a B2920 and it had nothing to do with money. The BX fit my needs much better than a B and no regrets here.

When I got my BX, I wasnt informed of fan issue and this was before I found TBN.

No I wasn't told , but then Dodge didn't tell me it would cost $400 to change the 16 sparkplugs in my hemi truck due to the major labour to get at all the plugs.

But at least for the tractor , (thanks to this site highlighting the problem) The first year I had tractor I cut a piece of plywood to fit around the filter and added a sheet metal piece at front and then hung it from frame with plumbing straps and bolts using exisiting frame holes, and no problems yet.
I use my tractor to pull firewood logs from bush 6 months of year.

Thought I had already replied to this.

No, he didn't mention it. I asked if it had the updated skid plate and he didn't seem to know about it. I stuck my head under there and let him know that it did indeed have the upgraded plate. I'm still on the fence about the Bro-Tek rear plate. I don't have a back 40 and don't anticipate any offroading.
