Diesel Stabilizer

Thank you everybody. I did order the Mr. Funnel. I guess since I'm buying my first tractor, I am worried about the whole diesel gelling thing even though we are now in our 2nd day of spring with snow flurries this morning. Hope I won't have to deal with this issue ever.

Generally if you are getting fresh fuel it's formulated for your local tempatures at that time of year.

I have a 300 gallon tank I get filled & shoot for getting it filled in the winter so I'm probably getting winter blend. I also put in Power Service White bottle & a biocide. Neither are likely needed, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Speaking of better safe than sorry... Grab a bottle of Power Service red bottle, the 911 stuff. Don't use it unless things gell up & you need too run, but it's a life saver if things get ugly & you need the machine.

Biocides are probably less useful for me as "algae" (not actually algae, but slimy microbes that look kind of like it) is a function of water contamination. My tank is in the barn under a roof. Also I live in Colorado where humidity is a foreign concept. I can't even get a drop of water out of the drain of my air compressor after dozens of hours of running in the winter.

This year in SW Colorado we can't even get water out of our downspouts. For March we are at 0.22" precip.

It's pretty amazing. There is always some residual fuel left in the funnel that can be saved for QC in a clear glass container and reintroduced to the existing fuel canister if "good." It does not drain real quickly when temperatures are around "gel point." The gelling can be managed.

So what happens when you run fresh E10 through it? Month old E10?

I treat all my E10 ethanol contaminated gasoline with Stabil Marine 360. After almost 3 years I’ve eliminate all my constant carb issues and problems with 2cycle chain saws, etc.

We have no local station with ethanol free but Buckee’s opened between Ranch and Houston and they have ethanol free. Next pass I’m picking up 5 gallons for my 2 cycle equipment.

Ethanol can destroy or swell some rubber used in hoses, O-rings or other parts. That's obviously a problem, but easy to work around. Most reputabke OEMs have been specing those parts for years.

Ethanol also attracts & absorbs water. And as everybody knows water & metal don't mix... corrosion. With small engines having vented fuel tanks & carbs, air & moisture can circulate in as temp & atmospheric pressure vary. That gets water in the tank & carbs. Modern automobiles have non-vented fuel tanks & fuel injection. So they don't get air in & out of the system causing condensation & water issues much.

Measuring the Power Service can be a bit of a hassle - I broke the glass measuring cup I found just laying around in the kitchen but you need not mention that to my DW. I use 5 gallon cans and a rattle siphon to fill my tank until I get my diesel stoves hooked up in my shops and start buying 300 gallons at a pop. Anyway, recommended is 1.6 ounces per 5 gallons hard to get precise huh - but what, heck just pour some in, right? Well what I do is save those nifty 2 cycle oil jugs with the measuring container on the top - squeeze the bottle and the oil fills the graduated container so you can pour it into your gas for the proper mix. I refill the empty with Power Service and get a reasonably perfect measurement each time.

Sorry, there are two types of oil bottles, you want the first one as you can easily refill it. The second photo requires the removal of a little valve in the bottle's neck and then replacing it again - all with a long nose pliers.

How long does it take you to use 5 gallons? I assume you’re talking about diesel?

Correct about the Diesel. I'm not sure how long it will take me to use it all. I'm thinking about the winter (which is long where I live) when I'll only really be using the tractor to blow snow. Would diesel last 6 months in a 5 gallon fuel canister with stabilizer?

Yes. Use the white bottle for Winter. It has some anti-gel.

jd- I use a couple of PS products. The winterized fuel in my tank is ~6 months old and after a battery charge the tractor started right up with no white exhaust the other day. My tractor had not been run since early January/late December due to injury. I agree with Rick. Fuel storage success has a lot to due with storage area's general humidity.

For sure! You don't want to 'gel up' EVER,
At the very least it is good insurance for the price.

I did once and promise you , never again.
Like any insurance, you have 2 choices, Before or after, and after is too late.

They found lots of rust inside the pump and we had to replace it with an updated pump. The owner of the injection shop recommended Howes Diesel Treat. I find it at Walmart and I use it now instead of PS.
