Thanks guys. One of my tractors has turf tires. The latest one I got has R1s. Both have loaders. I like the better traction with the R1s but they churn up the dirt/frozen mud around my barn. I was wondering if R4s were something in between. This sounds like the case although R4s are closer to R1s than turf tires.

This is exactly what R4s are. A compromise between turfs and R1s. They don't tear up the ground as bad as R1s but still give a little better traction than turfs. As far as R4s sliding on snowy or icy side hills goes I went on the sideways joyride of my life on a track loader one time. The grouses on the tracks become ski runners on a side hill. Severely wrinkled my Puckerometer. It's best for me to stay off snowy or icy side hills no matter what I am driving.
