Difference Between Two Air Compressors

My brother in law recently got one of the 80gal IR compressors from TSC. Overall it's a good quality unit for the price. They use a 3450 rpm motor and I'd guess the pump is probably running 1000-1200 rpm. So it's not as bad as the cheap craftsman direct drive compressors but it's not a 600rpm unit either. Sound was not obnoxious but I've heard quieter compressors.

I wouldnt count on it. $900 really isnt a higher end compressor. I gave a quick search but could find no reference to the actual compressor RPM on the IR site. Maybe someone can confirm what speed these compressors run at.

Very true, I didnt mean higher end of two stage reciprocating pumps. Higher end as compared to what I have and most single stage compressors.

I have found that IR is not listing the pump speed. But on these two less expensive models I am comparing the motor speeds are 3450rpm.

Something else that I have found out is that the 1725rpm motors are on units around $1799.99.

That is just not in the budget. Anymore info is most welcome. But I want to keep the cost to no more than $1300.00

That's the same one I have been considering. Any of these machines are a step up from my campbell hausfeld single stage.

I have also been looking at quincy brand compressors also. I like the motors better(baldor), I think the IR's I have been comparing have emerson motors.

An old used Quincy pump will out last a new TSC or Sears any day. Quincy has great parts support and are good industrial pumps. It is tough to find ones with out 3 phase motors but they are around. If you can find a Curtis, Gardner-Denver or an older IR they are all good pumps as well. The cast iron pumps are hard to beat.

These compressors I am looking at are not TSC or sears brands, they are ingersoll rand.
Tractor supply just sells them.

Been looking for a used old school compressor for a couple years. Everything I have found is 3 phase, or to far away and shipping costs makes it unreasonable. To replace the motor to a single phase baldor motor is not cheap.

During a search I came across eaton compressors. They seem to fit the bill for what I am looking for in a compressor. Less than 900 rpm pump speed, all cast iron, and a great warrenty.

Any members have one?

Eaton Compressor & Fabrication Inc

THis may or may not matter to you, but Eaton has a reputation for false advertising. Matter of fact they threatened several people and web forums for publishing that their product was falsly labeled Made in USA. http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/eaton-compressor-threatens-sue-me-over-made-china-compressor-post-143953.html?

Too bad you wernt at the auction i went to today. A very nice 5hp 2 stage (binks i think) compressor sold for $300. And a AWESOME Atlas Copco Airlet LE8 (28CFM) compressor went for 400!!!!! I would have been ALL OVER THEM but i was saving my cash for a plasma.

Turned out the plasma went for big money (too much). Someone STOLE those compressors. I should have bid on them. Hindsight is 2020.

Thanks for the input scooby. I have been really searching hard and I am going to look at a 1980's kellogg american later this week.
I passed on a IR 7.5 hp 80 gal. It was used a couple hours according to the owner and was still strapped to the shipping pallet. The motor speed was 3450rpm and they were asking $750.

I am going to pass on the eaton compressors and try to find a good used compressor locally.

Im not necessarily saying Eaton is a bad compressor. Many have them and are quite happy. 1ust some of their business practices leave a lot to be desired.

Good luck on your hunt. Do you ever get a chance to get to any auctions? Smaller auctions are where some of the best deals are found.
