phase 2 is finally complete - roof purlins have been installed. 55 degrees on New Year's eve was helpful. see link below for pics

next steps are installation of support beams for loft floor and installation of metal roof .
was hoping to have a roof over the tractor by Christmas....oh, well, it might be there by spring.

Very interesting thread guys. I'm building a garage w/ apartment too. Mine is looking to cost darn near 50K tho at 32 by 48 w/ attic trusses. I just got my permit too. I wonder if I can (or could have) saved some money w/ this stuff?

I'm stick framing it b/c that what my builder (father in law) prefers. Composite roof, hardi siding to match the house. Nice big hobby shop.

I was interested in building a 40x60 building using SIPs, then noted that I could get a kit from Menards for a 50x90 building for less than the 40x60 was going to run. Not apples to apples, I know, but this thread has started me thinking from the beginning about what to do. Does anyone have any links or thoughts on why you would want one system over another? I had Menards quote out a 2x6 stick built building vs a pole-constructed and was amazed to see the stick built quoted for less. Is there some newbie barn building guide out there comparing the options?

I saw on another post where you've made more progress and added a 12'x24' shed. Any chance we could see additional progression pics (if you have them) to get to the point you are now with the barn?

Also...it appears from the previous pics that you constructed your post by laminating 2"x4"s and 1/2" plywood. True?

The vertical & diagonal posts consist of (3) 2x6s with 1/2" (don't remember for sure) plywood sandwiched in between. The attached pictures are a quick progression from beginning to now. Right now the exterior is being used as a test pallet for the color of the new house currently under construction. The focus is now on finishing the house, 500' driveway and 2500' of fence.

Jim - thanks for the suggestion of doing a search on laminated post. Found lots of threads and info. This website is amazing when it comes to information!

kwTN - Appreciate the pics. Wow...looks like you've got alot of building projects going on all at one time. House looks good. Nice to have a testing spot to try out different color palettes. Sure beats having to repaint after the Mrs decides she doesn't like it once you've finished!
