Thinking about upgrading my digital camera, i currently have an olympus d-510(2.1 mp,3x optical zoom) looking at olympus C730 (10x optical, 3.2 mp, uses smart media or xd card) any info good or bad about this camera or any suggestions? really like the 10x optical.

Hi Frank,

What is the difference between the C730, C740, and the C750?

I had seen about $100. price differential and the C750 is 4 mp vs. 3... but what are the other differences?

John: as u know comparing cameras is tough, but best i can see is the 730, has sound cap . in movie mode the 740 does not, the 730 also lets u put an external flash on it and the 740 does not strange the 740 is more expensive in some places and less expensive in other places than the 730. the 750 i beleive is the same as the 730 only 4 mp rather than 3.2 mp on the 730(confusing isn't it) 3mp is more than i require, as even my 2.1 mp camera give great prints to 5x7 size. another strange thing, i have never seen a C730 for sale in any store, they have the c740 but not the 730 can only find that online. my friend bought one and it seems to be a great camera.

I know very little about camera's, but like very much the 10X optical zoom on my C700. I was able to test this out fairly well on a recent trip. When looking down in a valley, we could see a small house & what some thought was a lake of blue water. When zoomed in for picture, you can see individual bricks on the house, windmill, service wires, ETC & the blue was bluebonnet flowers.

I think this is only a 2MP camera and was taking pictures in 3rd best of 4 modes.

It also makes taking closeups easy, while no one is suspecting.

Neal: thanks for the input, i beleive the C730&C740 are updated modles fo the C700. as in all things electronic, they tend to give u more features for less$$$ the longer they have been around.

Yes, I think you are right. Cameras, like computers seem to be obselete before you get home with them.

Here are a couple of sites I use when researching digital cameras.

dpreviews

Steves Digicams

I find both to be very informative. The first site I noted does not have a review of the C730. However, you can find alot of user reviews. Steves has a full review of this camera.

I lean toward Canon but I know Olympus has nice equipment. Good luck.

Forgot to mention. I have done very well buying from www.jandr.com . Don't stop with their internet price, call them, they will always offer a fair price and all the cameras, electronics, etc. are USA warranty, not gray market.

I've got nothing to do with them, just always been happy with their pricing and service. No questions on returns either.

<font color="blue">...the 730, has sound cap . in movie mode ...</font>

Frank,

I have the movie and sound on my Olympus, but have never ever used it... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif... that's what I have a movie camera for... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif and that has been collecting dust for years since my girls are older...

I'd pick the unit for the 10x optical zoom and for the bells and whistles to make better photos, and not for the other aspects I'd probably wouldn't use... also past the 2 megapixels, unless you're doing/printing big stuff like 11 x 13 everyday... it's really hard to view the difference (for me), the more pixels sucks up the memory card space, sucks up battery usage, delays on saving photo's...

I have the E100-rs, and maybe ~1.3 usable megapixels, use rechargeable batteries, don't use the LCD viewer, don't use flash, with a 512 mb card can take ~~ 250-500 pictures (depending on lighting conditions) on a set of rechargeable batteries (I carry a second set as well) and most of the pictures come out like a pro took them... (I'm a beginner! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

The point being, I let the camera do the work, with the extra automatic bells and whistles ... and I just push the button... and being digital... keep on shooting until I get it right... /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

John: i am leaning towards this camera for the 10x zoom mostly, but i do like the features of being able to shoot in apeture or shutter priority or even manuel(when i am in my creative mode) /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif i would venture to say 80% of the time i will let the camera do the work. the 3.2 mp is a bonuns , although i don't print out more than normally 5x7. i like to shoot in fairly high res, and save them that way, then if i get a shot i really want to print, i have it in high res. i also don't use the movie mode, thats why i have a camcorder. fun to watch this old man going between the digital camera, 35mm minolta and the camcorder.(so my kids tell me) /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I sure like my 740 -- I bought a 128meg chip when I bought it ..... but now I have to buy another because the chip I bought won't support panorama - that requires an Olympus chip ---- so... when you buy additional mem - I'd make sure it's Olympus.... ... I bought a tube and UV filter off the net - It makes it safer to use cause the real lens is inside the tube and protected by the $15 filter ..

one of the reasons i am leaning towards the slightly older C730, is because it uses both smart media & xd cards, and i have a few smart media cards. and i beleive the 730 accepst a external flash and the 740 does not, am i correct in this? thanks for the input.

think so .... but wasn't an issue for me so I'm not sure. The thing I like about the 128M xd ... it holds 160 pics in high res! I can take a vacation and never worry once about running out of mem. .... especially if I'm now going to buy more! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
