I guess I never took any closeups of the blue trailer and the parts went into the dunp truck.I bought the pump/valve combo at Groban Surplus for $118 Here's the ad..

The best defense for the use of gas is you can run a log splitter off the engine,unhook the trailer from the splitter and dump the wood!!
You don't need any heavy wires and you can use it with any vehicle with a ball hitch.I made that blue trailer hoist outta pipe I had laying around...one inside of a bigger one for the most part and a $50 cylinder.I used that type of hoist because the stroke on the ram was so long.But it has great lifting capacity.
The hoist on the dump was pretty much patterned after the hoists sold for aftermarket dump conversions.It also requires a bit more head scratching and better welding ability...I've come a long way since the blue one /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
The truck is powered by a 3 1/2 horse Honda I took out of a snow blower..no use for that because I have all gravel...
Tank on the trailer is just a condemed welding gas tank the shop throws out now and then.I cut it down and rewelded it.The tank on the truck is a freon tank with 1/2" pipe fittings brazed on.Truck uses two cylinders because they are the cup seal type and I wasn't sure one would handle the lift...plus I got them free!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I try to scrounge up anything I might need..built a 3 PT for my Allis WC and have an extra pump and valve left over...these will go on the blue trailer when I get time... /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

George, the one I used is an Haldex Barnes. Northern item # 10721.
It is 1.4 GPM @ 1600 psi. It has a 2 1/2 gal resevoir and a 20' remote cordset. 399.00 simple and easy to do. pg. 501 in the northern spring/summer 2006 catalog. HTH, Nat

That three quart res. would be plenty once the cylinder has been filled.You'd just have to keep it topped off for the first few lifts.Large capacity tanks are more for providing a chance for the oil to cool off a bit under heavy compression.Look at how small the res. is on your power steering.Speaking of which...them pumps come in handy too!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Great for deck lifts and such.

Bob the resevoir holds 3 quarts and the pump and uses it to fill the cyl. If you fill the cyl first then lower the lift it will run out the vent of the res and you will still have only 3 quarts. These are power up,hold and gravity down units, unlike what you have on yours. On yours that would be true, but not on the elec/hyd units. I have a 4"bore X 24" stroke cyl that holds a little under a gallon and a half of fluid. With my resevoir full with the cyl fully extended the resevoir is nearly empty. I know that the manufactorer says 2 1/2 gal, but the pump sticks up inside the resevoir and takes up some of it's capacity.
I hauled a little over a ton of demolition debris to the dump yesterday and picked up 5 yards of mulch on the way home. I shoveled off 1/3 of it from the very back and then dumper the rest. All that was left was on the very front of the trailer and completly in front of where the cyl mounts and it didn't faze it to dump that. The more I use it the better I like it, and I'm happy I made it.

Good information. I hope to build an off-road trailer this summer; or maybe a dump body on a jitterbug; utilising the ram from my woodsplitter, and my backhoe pump and reservoir. (My welding skills aren't developed enough to do anything for on-road.) Is there any chance someone could show a pic of where the dump attaches to the frame?

Do you mean the "hinge"?
You can make a full length hinge with a big chunk of round stock inside of a pipe or DOM tube,on my dump truck,I used heavy plates and grade 8 one inch bolts.Because of the light duty axle,the trailer is limited to about a half ton,anything heavier and you would want to think about beefing up the rear of the frame to keep from breaking it when the hoist is up.

Thanks again for the info. I opted for the 3 position manual lever unit model 1560047 Graingers # 4NE14. Also got the 2 1/2 gal. reservoir, hose and swivel fittings. I will pick them up tomorrow. I ordered my cylinder and a 0-5000# gauge from Northern Tool. They should be here in about a week.

Mobile home frame rails, old 5hp briggs,used pump, valve, old flat bed from truck and new hoses. Here's the results. Plan to test with dirt today. [image]http://[/image]
