I know that the pins fit from the outside before ballast and that the tires are an 1 1/2" to 1 3/4" wider now. I hadn't realized that the video (same tractor as mine) was set so wide. For stability's sake it wouldn't hurt to widen the stance but I'm certainly not equipped to remount the wheels myself (especially with 550 to 600 extra lbs of ballast each). Is my best bet to get it back to the dealer?

This makes no sense. It is impossible that the tires grew to that degree. Did you watch the guy fill them?

They were filled in my presence, on the tractor while jacked up.
Then I can only say that you had been inserting the pins angled in the opposite direction and the curvature of the tire on part toward the axle gave you room to make the installation from the outside.

After my tires were filled the the tire man with plenty of experience lowered the pressure to 15 #. He said it to take into consideration there's such a small area in the tire to hold air . I've forgotten the rest of the details.

Only issue with the inserting the pins from the inside is the likelyhood of something snagging the linch pin out.

That said, you have a FEL. It doesn't take much of a bump or hole (DE may be flat but I'll bet it has holes) to tip over a tractor... especially when using the FEL. I would set the wheels for a greater width. As said before, another set of hands & a hard flat surface makes changing the tires easy.

If you insert the pins from the inside I would use a nylock nut and bolt to retain the pins.

I run 16 psi on my 110tlb rear tires without ballast added. My 4520 is 14 psi with 330 lbs of iron on each rear wheel. Don't understand why you need so much pressure?

FWIW, Deere does not recommend adding ballast to the rear of my 110tlb for backhoe use. You might inquire about this with your dealer to make sure it is okay to do this with your tractor and hoe. Adding 1200 lbs to the tires may make it harder to pick up the rear wheels with the hoe when repositioning or moving off a ditch.

Thank you all for the advice. It works fine with the pins on the inside. There is nothing in the 485A manual regarding either ballasted tires or wheel mounting positions. Having said that, I think that I'll have the wheels remounted to the 6th position from the 4th if for no other reason than stability. I don't see buying an engine hoist for this one project especially when I use my FEL for all other lifting.

You are trying to insert pins away from axle. Insert pins closer to axle. Inserting from axle side closer to rim not tire into outside hole should work.

Is it possible to insert the pins into the outside frame, just thru the first flat bar till flush, then back the tractor back between the frame mount. Could this have been how you disconnected it the first time. That is the only way I see that the pins could have been removed from the tractor the first time around

With the ballast in the rear tires can the hoe pick up the tractor rear end and move from side to side?

Are those welds or super glue ? That is possibly the worst factory weld I have seen .

I was wondering the same thing. Looks like the tire's cross section is narrower, at rhe radius from the axle where the pin goes.

Rather than tryng to get the pin into the hole from the tread side of the tire, try it from the bead side.
