My previous trucks from '93 on, have all been GM, save that one brain f--- Ford. Started with an x-cab '93, 5.7 (nice truck and the one I owned the longest) '99 Stepside Chevy, 5.3 with 4:10 gears/ 01' Yukon, 5.3, 4:10 gears/ '03 Avalanche, 5.3, 4.:10 gears: all towed well (smaller trailers)and gave good mileage. Then the 5.4 StupidCrew; cute truck, but didn't like to work. Hook a trailer to it, any trailer, and it just laid down. Kept that about a year and dumped it for the Tundra; Maybe thats why I'm impressed with the Toy:confused::confused:

its a 4.5 now huh, hmm was rumored to be a 5.9 when i first heard about it. isuzu had a 4.8 and now a 5.2 4 banger model

I always was 4.5L. All the Cummapart fans were dreaming again.

looking at the two drivers, the Tundra driver was hitting the gas just enough to slip and for the LSD to just kick in, then letting off on the gas, the chevy driver was holding down on the gas (not quite as much) and letting the diff lockup, then going...

at least that is how it would appear to have done to me.

anyone else see this from the clips, or am I seeing things that aren't there???

(bias note: I prefer the older (pre 1998) Volvo cars and Ford (7.3 PSD) trucks and vans, to either chevy or Toyota)

like i said most people dont understand how a locker works vs a posi or limited slip.
when a locker locks it stays locked until you stop a posi locks and unlocks while your still moving. this is why the gm does so well on the grade with rollers.
perhaps the simplest way to explin is to tell you about a vid i watched from gm.
same 2 wheel drive truck on a WET 20% grade smooth metal ramp
open diff- wont even get on the ramp
limited slip - climbs half way up then slides back down
locker- slips at first just like limited then has to stop at the top of the ramp to keep from driving off.
has nothing to do with 4x4 operation

here this explins it all with no brand bashing

Those G80 Gov locks are called grenade locks for a reason, junk! Seen it first hand, but I actually wheel offroad and rock crawl. Seen guys bring their mostly stock trucks out, and think they are the end all/be all to offroading, only to end up on the end of a strap.

I've seen 3 in the shop here blown to pieces.

My tow rig, a 550 rear wheel hp dodge with it's cummins works fine with it's LSD, because it's my street truck and tow rig.

My offroad vehicle has lock rights front and rear, simple traction that's held up for years.

They ARE NOT JUNK when used for what they were built to do, NOT for a hardcore rock crawler. But if only the weekend warriors who try to compete with the hard core crawl rigs would realize that......

The do an awesome job crawling thru' 3 feet of snow no problem!!

Yep, I agree. they're not made for rock crawling and they are not junk at all.

I see them used at diesel truck pulls all the time with 700HP+ in front of them. They seem to hold fine and they sure blow away the Ford & Dodge rears in traction!

Actually, I pull with my truck and have seen one give up. So they are junk on occasion.

I'd still rather have a G-80 11.5" true locker instead of a Ford 10.5" pathetic limited slip or Dodge's version of the AAM 11.5" rear.

Even if you saw one blow up at a truck pull......

I mean even the best breaks once in a while. :D

I've seen them all break. I've owned them all too, I am not blinded by brand loyalty, IMO that's a wast of time.

I want my stuff to be reliable, and fairly easy for someone like me to work on ;)

I have had to repair a busted diff in a 7500 kodiac dump truck, everything breaks and 9 times out of 10 is operator error. lack of maintenace and shock
loading tears stuff up no matter who makes it !!!!

Sterling has Chrysler making 1 ton trucks for them presently. I saw one at farm technology days. 100% Dodge cab, cummings power, and their own grille / logos produced at the Canada Dodge truck plant. They wanted a small series truck to get better name recognition in the larger truck series. Personally I wouldn't buy one if the had gold name plates...... A dodge is still a dodge. You buy it ( gas versions ) and you own it for life. They were offering 13k off list on the gas trucks and I bet that didn't cause a rush to the showroom. Lets not forget about the 2.99 gas credit.

It is kinda funny how a lot of the Dodge guys will call their truck a
"cummin(g)s" and not a "Dodge".

The 5.9L Cummins is my favorite light truck diesel, but it seems most of their owners are very proud of the other 2,000 parts on the truck made by Dodge.:p

/ Dodge-Nissan collaborating on Pickups? #58
had a newer cummins on the drive the other day, i was amazedhow i could hear myself think when standing next to it, they have come along ways.

We have many with over 400K on their old dodges, they might rust out but they never let you down. Mine's a 98.5 and it's just a baby with 118K on it.
