Hi Guys, Need a little advice on what to do. I have driveway that needs to be built up a bit and I just bought more stone aprox 6 loads of stone 100 ton. to help build the driveway up. I dont have it spread yet due to hit and miss weather And also had another project for a rented bobcat figuring to do both projects at one shot.

This is where the delemma comes in I see right around the corner their doing road work and repaving. This means they haul out regrinds usually free to anyone within close range. Most people use as the top layer on driveway and add alittle diesel fuel and the sun melts all together. I have not done this before and am wondering if anyone here has? And how did it work out for them. How did they due it any info would help! thanks

Free regrinds! take all you can get:D but leave the diesel in the diesel tank.:( All the diesel does is reduce the asphalt grindings to the base rock that was used in the original mix.

Yes, there will be many responses about how well diesel works but put some grindings in a bucket of diesel and then evaluate! But do use diesel to clean any tools you have used in asphalt. It works well for that.

You can get proper "Oils" to mix with or spray on either hot or cold for the grindings but for best results you will need equipment only a contractor will have.:D

Do it properly with those grindings and a great road you will have.:D

Tack coats the first Goggle hit, there are many.

Good luck getting them for free...When liquid asphalt (used in hot-mix production) prices skyrocketed last year, Contractors around here were fighting over them, as they require less asphalt to make hot-mix than using plain gravel. The Counties used to give them away - You haul. Now they accept sealed bids...It reminds me of a couple decades ago, when gravel companies buried large boulders that wouldn't fit in the crusher jaws...all of a sudden someone makes a break-through by using them as landscape art in sub-divisions, and whammo! You cannot even find boulders for free from a farmer around here...

I would use it as a Base Only then top it with rock . From My Experience when the sun hits it it does tend to get soft, sticky & Stinks really bad as Well as Sticks to the tires & soles of boots & shoes. Just My Opinion .

But free is good, Costs about 200 bucks a load here, But Does makes a very solid base . Best of luck . Bob

My father worked for the road dept., and he always said if you rolled it that it would get almost as hard as when originally laid. When they were paving [even oil and chips] every city dump truck had a paint can w' a little diesel and a paint brush to clean the shovels and rakes, as well as make them non-stick, also used to 'paint' the manhole covers so they could just clean 'em off w/ the back edge of a rake. I wouldn't add diesel to the millings.

I watched a railyard being built just outside the port to off-load double stack container trains where they laid 3 to 12 feet off millings over a vast area to make it level. The whole property was rolled and the rails installed, then they capped it w/ paving and brought in the trains. A few years later they spent the money to correct the clearance problem and started bringing the double stacks directly into the port & pulled up the rails...

If you can get it, maybe a thin layer of chips or stone dust on top would finish it.

I regrind works very well for any kind of road that you want to make. Just compact them in place and use some fine clean stone to top it with. Don't get "crusher run" stone, it has all of the fines and dirt in it. That will just make a mess.

I agree with all of the above about the diesel fuel. Not only will it goof up the asphalt in the mix, it is an environmental nightmare. You don't want any part of that.

No need to "top" the road millings.
I did my drive in them, no smell, no mess, NO dust, best drive ever.

You have to pay for them in central Iowa. My neighbor did his driveway last year. It is somewhat bumpy but otherwise it is solid and firm even in hot weather.

The milling's may vary in the amount of asphalt that remains in them. This could depend on the age of the milled surface.

So some will lay down clean while others may get sticky asphalt on hot days.:D
