drywall fine thread screws to install drywall in wood studs instead of metal studs

Yes, but if you are concerned due to unusually light studs, use an extra screw per stud (use 6 screws per 4-foot attachment to a stud instead of 5 screws). Additional screws are often used in drywall for applications where the wall is needed for some shear support.
Glue and 3 screws on the wall. Get the depth set correctly and they’ll be fine.

As a remodel contractor, I can't even count how many houses I've worked on that had the original sheetrock was installed with fine thread sheetrock screws. In my opinion, they hold the sheetrock to the wall just fine. Nothing to indicate that there is an issue, or shouldn't have been used.

I don't like them myself and I never buy them, but I don't see any issue in using them.

In a pinch, I've used deck screws, Hardie screws and wood screws to do sheetrock repairs.

For installing sheetrock, I use course thread screws.

In wood working I use fine thread screws in hard lumber, such as oak and maple. And coarse thread screws in soft wood, such as pine. Jon

UNBELIEVABLE how much screws cost now. It's just price-gouging, and anti-competiton, monopolization.

Seems like a feller could rig a simple test.
Screw some sheetrock to a scrap 2x4.
Tear off the sheetrock and see if the fine-thread screw pulls out.
.....post a YouTube.

I doubt that we need to see a YouTube.....to know that the fine-thread screw will hold.

Actually we were putting up some drywall for my brother yesterday. On his wood studs we used nails. They were smooth, no ring shank. The box of the ring shank said they could rust. The nails he used had a concave head, so more drywall compound could cover?
When we built my parent's house, it was all nails.

The only ones that pulled out were the ones where somebody missed the stud, and left the nail in the wall.

Since then, I prefer screwing up the ceiling sheetrock, but will still nail the walls from time to time.
