Dump Trailer

I got back out and made a little progress on the trailer.

I bolted the wood to the sides of the bed. Because of the sockets that I put in the top to receive bedside extensions in the future, I had to rout notches in the top rails all around in order to get the top rail to fit flush with the other boards.

I've missed the good weather, and so I'm probably going to have to take the sides and front off one at a time now and bring them inside to varnish. The bottom of the bed has a single coat on it. I'll probably leave that like it is for now and just plan to put a bunch of varnish on it again in the spring.

It looks like you are not only going for functionality but looks as well. It probably will charm many a young child who will try to convince dad/friend's dad for a ride in the trailer. It will probably make a good hay ride for your kids. I just did that for my son and other kids and it was a big hit. Disclaimer: THERE WAS NO DUMPING of the youths.

How can "no dumping of children" be any fun? Got to at least bring it up 15 or 20 degrees to get their attention!

Cute little dumper. I like the natural look but out of feelings for nostalgia I wonder if it should be a "little red wagon?"

I put the wood on the tailgate tonight. In the picture, the bed is dumped just a bit to show how the tailgate will swing to allow material to dump.

Those bolts are plenty long. I'm planning on going back to all of the bolts and cutting them off flush with the nylox nuts that I used to put them on.

Only problem I can see is this one is too nice to get dirty! You are going to have to start over and build an ugly one

Whoa there buddy. Don't cut all the bolts off short. You need to add adjustable chains on both sides of the dumpgate to control the rate of feed of gravel and such. The extra length of the bolts should be sufficient to attach aome "S" hooks or similar to allow using chains to control the amount the gate will swing back.

Good thought.

I was actually planning on drilling into the pins at the bottom of the gate and running an eye bolt through the hole to attach said chains.

Those bolt ends sticking out beyond the nuts are just about shin height. I know me... I can't even leave my ball in the receiver on my truck without finding it in the dark with my tibia.
