I connected a jumper between the clutch frame and the chassis ground, started the engine, engaged the PTO and it kept running! I then removed the jumper and it continued to work correctly. I am going to connect a wire just in case, but I think my problem is solved. Thanks for your suggestions!

Great to hear! I'm about to do a Predator swap into a Z757. Can I pm you for some wiring help? I think I have everything else sorted out.

Sure, glad to help if I can!

I am trying to figure out how adding a ground would change anything unless existing ground is very marginal and the PTO surge was causing some ground overload causing ignition coil to not create a spark. Once coil is pulled in surge goes away and ignition coil now works again.

Strange failure and kudos for sticking with it and ultimately finding a solution.

Still doesn't explain why it was a problem when close to the engine, but not when farther away.... But if it works, run it!

It's not that, I took the mower belt off and it died instantly.
My brother has a Chinese gasoline generator, a 5hp model. We replaced the carburetor but it died instantly as soon as load was engaged.

It didnt die when i override the governor and manually open the throttle. Turned out the governor shuts the throttle before opening it, and that fraction of a second is enough to make it die before it regains.

Turns out theres a screw on the carb that limits how far the throttle can shut. I adjusted it so it can only shut a wee bit, to compensate for air temperature when it gets to operating temperature and it can maintain high idle standby with less throttle. Now, the governor taps against this screw before immediately opening throttle again to carry the engine load.

Why the governor does this, i dont know, but apparently it needs this backstop to overcome the delay in governing...

the pto starts to turn the belts a little before the engines quits.

We ordered a new carburettor for my brothers chinese gas generator.

Whether we switched on a small angle grinder, or something that engages smoother, the engine died.

Untill i held the throttle with my fingers, overriding the governor: For some reason thr governor first shuts the throttle, and then pulls it wide open when the rpms are already dropped to the point it cant recover. So i adjusted the low idle screw so that the governor could only reduce throttle minimally, which makes it run over this initial governor error. Works flawlessly now.
