V65: The wheelbase of this truck will only 4" longer than your crew cab long bed, and the same as a crew cab 9' cab n chassis truck...

The chassis in the picture I was moving with the tractor is a crew cab short bed... it will get stretched about 21" +/-.

Clemsonfor: yes, the gravel area in the foreground is the county road, and my driveway. I was standing in the front yard when I took that picture. The view from the other side is below, for perspective.

Off work today. Most of my time was spent repairing horse fence. I worked on drilling spot welds on the left side late in the evening, I've got as much removed as I can until the extended cab section is in the barn, and not in the back field.

extend capped pickup box forward for more hauling capacity and then tow it behind the family hauler! Jon

The frame, bed, and perhaps cap, will be what is used on the project truck... so no dice on making a trailer out of it! I've already got a 12' box trailer for that anyway! It's even red.

Got to the back field today with a cordless drill, sawzall, and as many batteries as I could find... And chopped the donor extended cab into two pieces. Went surprisingly easy, separating it at the seam in the front floor foot well. I cut thru the inner and outer rocker panels in line with that, and cut the roof just behind the windshield.

Hauled it up to the barn with the tractor, and wiggled it into the increasingly crowded barn. Did some measuring off the crew cab, and my other extended cab, to establish a base line for measurements to figure out exactly where it will get cut.

Because I have cut the floor, rocker panels, and roof much longer than needed, it will be trimmed back to fit. I started that by removing the outter rocker panels. To do so, I rolled the cab section onto its back wall, making it easier to work on, as well as give me a chance to get a good look at the amount of rust damage that will need dealt with... more than I had hoped, but since I only have $100 in the white cab anyway, I'm not gonna complain... too much.

Steady progress... that is the key I find. Keep it going!

One minor issue I've discovered while taking my measurements is the crew cab rear seat mounting points are 1.5" closer to what will be the rear extended cab seat than the extended cab front seats. Which will make the already small rear seat area even smaller, unless I do extensive floor pan modifications, including moving the whole section of floor pan forward to match. Which would then mess up the fitment of the carpet. I'll likely just live with the smaller back seat area, my kids are little people anyway... *grin*

Greg - With only 2, I don't have nearly as many kids as you so I'm not quite the expert that you are. But, if memory serves me correctly - although my children did start out as "little people", they did grow! My baby girl is now 24 and stands at 5'11.5" (and about 125 pounds!).

Seriously though, 4" is a lot of legroom to be losing. Are you sure there's not a fairly easy way to keep it?

GREAT progress on this. Guys like you amaze me!!
