People are often under the impression that the police are going to want to see the exact postition of vehicles, measure skid marks etc. over a cracked taillight. It's really not their fault they don't know any better. Often they think the police or the insurance company is going to hold it against them if the move to a safe spot. It is something that should be stressed when licenses are given.

How many times have we all seen the 2nd and 3rd accident occur while people try to navigate throught the original accident. 9 out of 10 times the original vehicles or at least some of the vehicles involved can be moved.

Almost as good as that tire changer who doesn't want to ruin his rim/tire so he changes it at the apex of a curve on a rainy or snowy night on a busy roadway. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Both times, just not for improper lane usage or failure to stop in a timely manner or whatever you would call it. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I used to be pretty good at passing the attitude test, I just couldn't figure out why I had to go through it every time I got pulled over. Couldn't y'all put a notation in the state CIC/NCIC that a guy has been throught the drill numerous times and isn't known for giving the officers problems? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Sorry to hear that.

I asked if you got a summons for two reasons.

Naturally I am the complaint department for my friends when they have any negative interaction with law enforcement. That goes for the "meter maid" right up the the FBI and everyone in between /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

One of the most puzzling complaints goes like this-

friend: I got stopped by this rotten, no good, son of a gun of a cop today!

me: So what did he ticked you for?

friend: Oh. he let me go but he wasn't nice at all. He really chewed me out

me: Huh, he let you go with a warning and he's still a nasty so and so? Duh?

I think the proper thing to do is either give them a summons OR a strong talking to and warning. Don't do both. If you're already hurting them in the wallet with a ticket no need to add insult to injury. If you're letting them go at least you want to discourage them from doing the same thing again and thus the strong warning.

At least that was what I was taught.

That reminds me of something that happened to me years back. Wasn't funny then.. but I can laugh at it now.

I was driving the family somewhere, and changed lanes... I used my signal, looked over the shoulder.. etc.. but I still ended up cutting off a state trooper in one of those small sporty mustangs... completely my fault.. honest to god error.. I just didn't see him. There was no accident.. we were still feet apart, and he had good brakes... lights and sirens went on immediatly.. and fortunately there was an abandoned parking lot.. say.. 20' up.. I pulled in... this huge officer stepped out of that mustang and and gave me the look of death in the rearview mirror... he didn't even walk over to my vehicle.. just pointed at me.. then pointed right in front of him.. looked a bit impatient too.
Boy I was sweating profusely.... He started 'barking' as soon as I cleared the car door... gave it to me up one way and down the other... ran my tag / license, etc.. stood there a minutes stariring at me... ( at this point the only words I had uttered.. or were capable of uttering were.. yes officer.. no officer.. etc ).. he shoved my insurance/license back into my hand.. got into his car and drove away... no ticket... but I think i would have prefered one as oposed to the verbal warning.... I think I drove about 30mph home that day... don'ty think I changed lanes the whole time....like I said.. I can laugh at it now...and in reality.. he did me a favor... I always looks at least twice now...and no ticket to boot... the warning was probably way more effective a deterant.

Also as a side note... talk about what officers are thinking before they pull you over, etc.

Just get a concealed weapon permit.... I guess that info comes up from your tag.. Thoug I have only been pulled over about 5 times in my life.. the last 3 were when I was an adult and had my CWP.... The first thing the officer asks is.. do you have a weapon on you.. boy.. that makes you sweat too.... Though I dod remember reading. .i think in the fl statuates.. that if you have a cwp.. you are sopposed to hand it over to the officer with your drivers license.. etc.. even if they don't ask for it.. etc.

I might very well be confusing NC with FL but I think its true in
both states that if you have a CWP you have a duty to inform
the officer that you are carrying.

It certainly is a good thing to do in any case....

Notifying the officer that you have a gun sounds like a good idea, but you probably have to give some thought to how you want to word it. Like looking at the officer and saying "I've got a gun!" might be unwise? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Last week I went to the bank and in the parking lot I found a hypodermic needle. No garbage around so I picked it up (it was capped) and put it on hump in the front floor of my truck. I was driving home and thinking, "great I am going to get pulled over, tell them I am a retired cop and then explain the hypo on my front seat area" /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

It appeared to be an insulin needle dropped by one of the banks customers when exiting a vehicle but I wasn't leaving it around for some kid to find.

Guess you always have to consider how things MIGHT look to an officer stopping you, that goes for guns and other things as well.

I know they are hazardous waste and should be disposed of as such, but you don't crush it with your heel because you will release whatever if anything is inside onto the ground. The procedure we used was to put them in special holders for safe handling and then dispose of them. The holder resembles a toothbrush travel container ( we use to use the new ones for that too /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif and I still have some) Breaking it or monkeying with it was discouraged as that is how people usually stick themselves and as I said you can release what is inside.

Fortunately this one was capped and I eventually disposed of it safely. I could have gone 2 blocks to the local police station
and let them chuck it but I had about 5 minutes to get my son from school so the choices were limited. I either pick it up and go, or leave it.

That sounds fair. I didn't used to have a problem with a butt chewing so much if I got out of the ticket. It used to really [censored] when I got pulled over on a fishing expedition. Just because someones driving an old [censored] or a fast car doesn't mean they are illegal! Since I've grown older and drive a nicer vehicle I don't have the problem with nuisance stops anymore. When I do get pulled over and I know I've done something I tell them to can the lecture and write the ticket. When I get the line on how I rolled a stop sign that I didn't or about how I was doing 20 over when I wasn't I'll get a little mouthy. Some cops like to pull that stunt and if you stutter they know you aren't sure so they go ahead and write you. With the cameras they have in the cars these days they have to write you if they pull you so why take a load off the cop on top of the load the judge is going to give you?

One of my son's f(r)iends was going target shooting and had about a dozen pistols on his front seat. As luck would have it, he got pulled over. The cop didn't instantly notice the guns.

Keeping both hands at the top of the wheel he said, "Uhm officer, this is in no way a threat, but I, uh, have some guns."

"Dayam! What you aimin to do, boy, start a wahr?"

"Just going target shooting."

"Is that one of them new Berrettas? Can I see that?"

Twenty minutes and considerable banter later, he got off without a ticket.

"Now you drive carefull, y'hear!"
