The reason that goats' milk isn't cost effective in this country, is because there aren't that many goat dairies. It's the law of supply and demand. Worldwide, more people drink goats' milk than cows' milk. In fact, worldwide, more people also drink sheep's milk than cows' milk. Worldwide milk consumption is: #1 goat's milk
#2 sheep's milk
#3 cow's milk
#4 water buffalo milk

Don't be surprised, you've probably consumed each of them if you like good cheese. Feta cheese is made with goat's milk. Romano cheese is made with sheep's milk. And REAL mozarella cheese is made with water buffalo milk.

Egon, I'm interested in this statement. Where did you find this? I'm not questioning it (well, OK, I am ), but am interested because I had not heard this before.

Can't remember where but probably over 50% of the worlds population is lactose intolerant.

In many cases powdered milk sent out as aid is of no benefit to the people receiving it.

Are you saying that only cows milk has lactose? I'm lactose intolerant so I have to takes pills when eating milk products. In my 20's I started getting sick and it took awhile to figure out it was milk related. Looks like my oldest daughter has it already. The pills work. If goat milk does not have lactose I might try it with her. Don't know if I or she will drink it though.....

Dan, I had the same thought before we got our Nubian. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the goat milk tastes better than store-bought cow milk. It is a little like whole milk (somewhat thicker than 1% or 2%) but sweeter. Very good. Once you pour it into a glass you won't know the difference.

Interesting link. Human milk has more lactose than milk from cows and goats. I guess loctose intolerance is a way to get the babu off the bottle so to speak.

Reading the link kinda makes me think that the goats milk won't help my daughter or me. I used to drink a gallon of milk in one or two days. I have not had any milk to speak off in decades. Too many Pavlovian learning episodes that sent me running to the bathroom.

We eat a lot of cheese but I and now my daughter have to take the enzyme pills before we chow down.
