I will try some of these fixes and get back to you if I don't find a solution. If this is truly a "virus" or worm, I think someone would know about it. For now, I have renamed the file "FAScopy.exe" (found in documents and settings/temp folder) and rebooted. It did not come back, and there was no error message. If everything runs OK for a while, I'll do the regedit routine and then delete the .exe file.
