After taking the carrot top picture I turned to walk around in the garden and I was shocked with what I saw. The carnage, the destruction, the pilferage. I can't believe my eyes. The garden has been attacked! I was just in the garden the day before yesterday and all was fine. I thought I'd give these a day or two more to grow and now, and now, they've been destroyed. I'm devastated! I didn't even get to try one. I even planted these right in the middle of the fenced garden so they would be hard to see from the outside. I believe they probably wore masks to disguise their true identities. There was probably more than one.....one to watch the gate. They must have been casing the joint, just waiting for the opportunity to strike! ARH!!

Darn Coons, Where " old Yeller" when you need one. I reckon that means war and the weapon of choice will not be " foul language"

You certainly have my sympathy as I've been there .. done that:(

Oh! The horror! The carnage! The humanity! I'm having a flashback to 2006 when the 'coons got my corn. RATS! You have my sympathy Don, but there's nothin' you can do but clean up the mess and set a trap for the next wave of thieves. What a shame!

BTW: I'm including a photo of cilantro in my garden. You can see the leaves are somewhat similar to carrots.

Don

My condolences on your loss. :(

They seem to know exactly when things are ripe. If you think to yourself, "I'm going to pick that this weekend" it is too late. The critters will get it the day before you harvest. Ours was decimated by woodchucks and raccoons several years. I finally resorted to an electric fence to keep them out. $100.00+ to protect $20.00 worth of veggies.

Anticipating the perpetrator(s) would return to the scene of the crime (I picked that up from watching Perry Mason ). I quickly set a trap baited with...........a few morsels of corn that was left at the scene of the crime.

I placed the trap out at dusk yesterday evening. The masked perp. has been exposed. One down.

Way to go, Don.:) I caught and relocated two 'coons, and haven't had any more problems until last night. This morning I had a nice tomato and a small cantaloupe completely gutted. How there can be such a small opening in the cantaloupe and nothing left inside is a real mystery, but all that was left of the cantaloupe was the peel. I'll be setting the trap again tonight. I'll put some cantaloupe peels and the partially eaten tomato inside the trap for bait. That's worked best before.

JC, the hole in my cantaloupe was only slightly larger than the one in your pumpkin. I don't see how the 'coon got his mouth in there, so I think it must have reached its paw through the hole and scraped out the meat inside. It's amazing how much dexterity they have with their paws.

Well, no perpetrators made it into the live trap last night for a one way trip out of the garden. I'm finding cucumber morsels just inside and outside the garden gate, squirrel's I believe. Fortunately the cucumber crop is doing well enough this year to share a few. I've come up on pumpkins with a small hole in them and had a chipmunk or small squirrel pop their head out.

None here either, Don. I think they weren't that hungry yet from their feast the night before. The trap is still set for tonight. My bait should be really good and smelly for maximum attraction.
