Thanks Harv, you are an inspiration as I read (and reread) your website and projects.

Do you like the side door on Iris? Does the single arm ever present problems or is it just in my mind. I guess the real question is, If something happened to Iris, would you go get the same model again or would you go to something different?

The only problem with Iris that I've found is there isn't a JCB dealer close by. My closest dealer is in Texarkana and they're not a fully stocked dealer.

I'm wanting to buy another machine these days. The one I'm looking at is the JCB 190T or JCB 1110T. They're bigger than Iris, have tracks instead of wheels and tires, and I've rented a 190T and was very impressed.

The side door is important to me because a lot of the time I work by myself. Crawling in and out of a conventional skid while working doesn't interest me at all.

JCB has been making the single arm machinery for almost ever. Their Loadall material handler rates up to ten thousand pounds and forty plus feet of extension. That kind of engineering history makes me not worry about a single arm failure.

JCB impresses the heck out of me with their engineering of their equipment. Every repair I've had to do on Iris has been made simple with their thinking. And unlike all of their competition, they're a privately held company.

The only downside for me is there not being a dealer close. I have to believe that has more to do with the quality of dealers versus the quality of the equipment.

Harvey,

I agree with you on JCB. Great equipment!!

Not having a dealer close by was why I passed on buying a JCB backhoe. Since I can only afford used, it's much more important for me to have a dealer as close by as possible.

Eddie

This week has been about setting posts. Monday we cleared trees and undergrowth from the fence line. Tuesday we dug the post holes along the back line and set some posts.

The client is wanting to preserve this section by enclosing it. He'll get it inside his fence but have another fence to keep it from the exposure to the livestock.

Here's a before.

Yesterday after mixing three yards of concrete and setting the rest of the back line posts we had lunch. After lunch we dug these eighty six holes and placed the posts in them.

This morning we'll mix almost ten yards of concrete and set this line. It's a little over half of the north side fence line.

These posts are eight feet long even though only about four foot is sticking out of the ground. This insures I have concrete under by post as well as around them.

They'll be as tall out of the ground as the post in the foreground. It's the corner post for the back line and north side fence.

And this is what it looks like after yesterday. We got the posts set down to the cross fence (67 posts, not 85 or so) Then we dug and put the posts in the holes for the next sixty seven up to the house. We'll set them today.

For those who aren't familiar with my system I use a pile of mixed sand and gravel and a concrete mixer. I usually use two day laborers to feed the mixer.

The mixer is a nine cubic foot model. I have a custom bucket I made for my tractor that holds a half yard of concrete. We put the mixer load into the bucket.
