Hi all,

I've been lurkin this site for a few years, but this is my first official post. I've wanted to buy a Kubota tractor for a few years, I just haven't pulled the trigger. I've pretty much decided on this setup:

Kubota 2670 with FEL, MMM and possibly grass catcher. I have ~ 3 acres of mixed land, some is lawn, some overgrown field and some wetlands (read: swamp) I also have a 400' driveway which needs to be clear of snow ( lots of snow this winter). What I need to know from all you owners is the following:

1. How good is the 54" Fine Cut MMM? I don't have a golf course lawn, but it is lawn, I need a mower that works like a real lawnmower.

2. What about the grass catcher, I've read all I can on this unit and the opinion seems to be mixed. Here in the NorthEast we do have a lot of leaves that need to be cleaned up. I saw one thread where someone suggested that I buy a rake for $10 instead of a Tractor For $18K.

The machine would be used for a variety of tasks, primarily mowing the lawn and clearing the driveway, but also for hauling wood and other wheelbarrow type tasks.

I currently have a great setup of a Wheelhorse 314-8 tractor with a 48" deck, powered grass catcher, 42" single stage snowblower, cab, wheel weight and chains. It has been a great machine for 16 years, I just want something that can do a little more. The FEL will be a big help as I'm not as young or as strong as I was. I also have a couple of Gravely 2 wheel tractors that I use for brush hogging the big stuff.

I welcome any advice you folks can give me.

Cheers,
Byrdnyrd

You will be able to do more with the Kubota than a rake. That said I have a mid mount mower on my Deere and it does a nice job. Don't have a grass catcher so I can't comment on that.

I went from a Wheelhorse 520H to a BX2200 in 2003 and never looked back. I don't have the 54" fine cut deck but the 60" on both the BX2200 and my current BX25 cut very well. You'll love having the loader and the 4 wheel drive. I had a grass catcher and a snow blower for the Wheelhorse but never missed the catcher and only got the blower this year. The loader took me through 10 New England winters without encountering any conditions it could not handle if given enough time. I got the blower with the new tractor to save time and reduce the problem of large snow banks at the edges and ends of the driveway. If I'm being honest, the jury is still out for me about the blower. I broke several shear bolts which is a major nuisance. It's probably just a matter of getting used to it and it certainly will throw snow. Went through 20" of standing snow with full passes and it never hesitated.

My BX2200, tractor tread with wheel ballast, easily handles the 60" MMM. I have said again and again "once you go 60" deck you will never go back to a smaller deck". But it will not throw the grass as far as a smaller deck. Therefore a grass catcher, which I have no experience with, might not work well. So when my lawn is wet and clumps up I use a lawn sweeper. That makes things look nice and neat. As for snow removal I have an asphalt driveway about 250' long. Have been using the FEL in float and a 5' scraper blade with excellent results since 2001. Here along lake Erie we are in the snow belt. Some months snow removal is a every day morning task. No scratches on the asphalt but if the scraper catches an edge of asphalt it will rip it up real fast. I used a Cub cadet 2072 with front mounted snow blower for 13 years. It was a great machine, but now I don't waste so much time with broken shear bolts, clogs, snow in the face, wheel chain adjusting and repair, worn down skids that did scratch the driveway, frozen in place snow chutes, etc... :2cents: :welcome:

Morning and welcome!
I started with a b2200 with a mmm, fel, front blower. I now run a B2620, TLB with front blower and front blade. For a couple of inch snow I use the blade. Heavy snows I use the blower and then the blade to clean up. Because I have a 350' gravel/sand drive I can't use the blower until the ground freezes. Once you have a FEL you'll use it for more than you can imagine.Anyway, any Kubota will serve you well. Good luck and enjoy!

Welcome!

I have a BX2360 that we use to mow 2 acres and clear snow from a 300' x 12' driveway. We also used a Wheelhorse (312-8,42" mower) before getting the Kubota. The 60" mower will do a much nicer job than your Wheelhorse mower and the extra width will allow you to trim closer to building, trees, flower beds, etc.. than the 54" mower. We cut our mowing time in half vs the Wheelhorse. I kept the Wheelhorse for pulling a yard trailer and leaf pick up with an Agri-fab leaf vacuum. The vac is not the hot set up but it does a good job and the price was right, used. i use a 50" rear blower that works great for me and allows me to keep the FEL on for clean up or moving piles. Also it was much less expensive that the front Kubota blower. I found that the 23 HP BX has more than enough power for the traction available and I am happy I didn't spend the extra money on the BX2660. You will use the FEL more than you think!

Sounds like a decent setup to me and I came very close to buying a B2920 a few years ago before deciding I really needed two tractors. I agree with those recommending a 60" deck, we went from a 54" on our John Deere and now have two 60" and one 62" and prefer it over the 54".

I don't like a grass catcher myself and when needed use a sweeper, so I can't help on that part.

One question, you mentioned that you have some low swampy land. Does the area you finish mow stay dry or does it tend to be soft? The Kubota will be much heavier than your current mower so on soft ground rutting can be an issue.

I second going with the 60" deck and canceling on the $2000 grass catcher. Is the driveway paved?,, use the money for a blower or hydro plow.

My BX has a 54" mower. I chose 54 over 60 because the 60 would not fit between my landscaping, so that's something to consider. I agree that the 60 would allow me to trim closer to some things. But the 54 works for me (not fine cut).

Previous mowing was a Deere 345 liquid cooled gas engine. The finish cut was a step above the Kubota, after all the Deere was a garden tractor/mowing machine, no PTO's and light duty vs the BX. I've tried Gator blades but kinda prefer the OEM blades as they seem to cut better.

I mow around 2 acres and bush hog (TSC KK48") twice that. BX2750D front mount blower for snow is fantastic (and should be for the cost!)

Thanks to everyone for the input. I do have a paved driveway so I could use a blower but I was hoping/planning on just using the FEL to do the driveway. To be honest guys, if I can't use the FEL to clear the snow, this is going to be hard to justify to the budget committee!

The swampy area is only wet in the early spring, I use the Gravely with dual wheels to clear the brush in that area, but the long term solution would be a rear brush hog.

If any of you New England guys have advice on dealers (few and far between up here) I'd be happy to hear about them. Please send me an private email through this board or use my gmail account.

You could probably use the FEL for clearing the drive, realizing that as you do the learning curve you may do some driveway damage. You'd want to have it well staked with room to move between the stakes to push/load snow without digging into the asphalt. Float position or lowering the bucket edge and then curling it a bit toward you could also mitigate impossible damage. You could try this the first year while the committee takes on a second job to pay for the blower for the following year.:dance1:

You’ll find plowing with a small FEL just plain sucks. As far as what dealers; these guys are awesome.

.::NORFOLK POWER EQUIPMENT::.

I'm in RI and frequent the RI store; they have 2 in MA as well. I dealt with both the RI salesmen and the owner of the 3 stores. I had visited other local dealers from varying manufacturers and I bought the Kubota because of the dealer. I made the right choice for me. (PM also sent.)

I dont mow with my b3200, have another machine for mowing. I do however plow my rather large cement driveway with a back blade. You can find a decent back blade used for pretty darn cheap. I saw an older model 6 footer for $150 on graigs list here locally while just browsing the net.

As far as a FEL goes, you will find tons and tons of uses for it.

I say pull the trigger on the new tractor, not getting any younger and ya only live once.
