My new toy was delivered yesterday evening. It was a rainy day, so i didn't really get a chance to play (much). My first project that I had planned was the removal of some tree stumps along the back part of the property, where I am replacing the fence.
First stump, about 10" in diameter: This one was a real pain. I don't know if it was just because I was trying to get a feel for the controls, or if it really was just a tough stump, but it took me over an hour to get it out.
Second stump, a little smaller, but surrounded by huge stumps, that I have no intention of pulling: The smaller stump, about 6" in diameter, was right where I need to put a post. I couldn't even shift the post left or right, because of the huge stumps on either side. This one went a little faster, it took about 30 minutes. Partly because I was beginning to get a feel for the controls, but also because I went and got the ax and saw out for the really big roots. I sort of felt like that was cheating, but hey, it got the job done.
The next couple of stumps also about 6" in diameter were a piece of cake. The came out just like I expected them to. Again, I think it helps that I am beginning to get a feel for making the backhoe work in a fluid motion, rather than moving each lever on direction at a time.
The bucket's biggest test was going up to a pile of gravel, lifting a full bucket's worth, and dumping it back out. It did great for that little test.
Overall, after some initial frustration, and a very steep learning curve with the backhoe, I am very happy with this little SCUT.
