Fixed vs. Expandable chamber round baler???

/ Fixed vs. Expandable chamber round baler??? #11
I have an older GEHL 1500A closed throat and bale a lot of hay. I have a junk parts baler. I have used the same machine since it was new. I do my own repairs without a dealer in the area.
If I were planing on that scale of use I would go with something nearly new with electric tie, crowder wheels, and a dealer nearby. Locally Vermeer is big but Case and Deere seems to have a better baler.
If you buy old and used just be sure you can fix it and can get parts.
Absolutely dont buy a Mortl disc mower.

Custom Bailing here runs 20-22$ per round with hay running 50-70 for clean fetilized hay this year. Thus the need for my own equipment, plus I'll have the extra time for bailing this year.

Thanks Again for all the fine input.

ps What's the story with the mortl mower rdbigfarm??

The custom baling sounds like a good deal to me but I know it doesn't work well in practice.

The Motrl cuts hay very well but the disc holders are not properly attached. The disc holders are a short stub rod that is welded to a plate you push the plate down to change disc. The dealer I bought (farmers COOP in TN) from will not honor the warranty and I have to weld the holders. Its a new machine that I have to fix like it was a worn out $600 fixer upper.
I could have gotten a lot better machine and support for my 5250.
I should have gotten a FORT or CASE or someother design.
I had a Case that I wore out.
I didnt like the Fella the frame was very weak.

rdbigfarmboy,

If you want a quality disc mower made here in TN and sold only by farm machinery dealers, not by a feed store. Look at the HayMAXX disc mowers. They are shaft driven, have 1/3 less moving parts, need 20% less HP, and are MADE in the USA!

Listen to CCI, I did. Bought a new Vermeer Rebel and haven't been disapointed. Your baler is not the place to save money and gain heartache. For less than twice your budget I had all new equipment. Not new now. With the financing offers going now I don't see why anyone who wants equipment is not financing.
