Flail Mower usage questions

sdef,

Thanks for that clarification. I would dearly like to get a flail mower for my JD2305. Because of the overall small size of the tractor, finding a flail that will fit it is challenging but doable. My fear was that I was going to need a position control on my 3ph (and using that over rocky surfaces is really no biggie for me--I mostly have clay). Recently I have had my eye on a Trimax which seems compatible for my tractor in either 4.5 or 5' versions. It would make a great tool to mow under hedgerows.

Again, thanks for the input

SI2305

JD2305, 200CX, LX4, 5' rear blade, 4' box blade. subsoiler, 60" RFM----and officially jealous of flail mower owners!

Hammer blade is used for bush, if you want to deal with leaf, I think that Y blade is better.
Thank you Jack for your comments. I am new to flail mower usage and purchased this EFG model primarily for mulching leaves in the fall. I am trying to get it setup to do this but am not having any luck. Not having any experience with a flail mower, I am trying out the blades that came with it first, which are the grass blades. I also ordered the hammers for larger brush, which is not my issue at the moment.

As a last resort I am going to try the hammers but was under the impression these were for larger brush. I would have thought the grass blades would have mulched the leaves. At this point I still do not believe the hammers will do any better on very lightweight leaves, but will try them.

Yes several of us thought so also. But it seems the grass blades are not working to mulch leaves and I am out of options.

I have a flail that came with the "hammer style" blade, it is not the heavier cast blade, but rather a folded scoop style. My mower has significant suction to pick up the leaves, but I have noticed when I dump it that most are not mulched, just simple collected. You can see the effect in my thread regarding gathering leaves. I think that you would have to do something else in order to actually mulch leaves like a rotary does. The final picture shows what I have been able to do at gathering the leaves. It is not perfect, but does make the leaf chore much easier. ;)

Thanks MJ. Yes I saw your post previously when searching on TBN. But my goal is to drive over them, mulch and not have to deal with anything else :) Plus it is good, natural fertilizer. As of yesterday, I have given up on using this flail mower as a mulcher.

Very slow in HST low running around the PTO speed of 2500 RPM.

I spent a couple hours last night mulching around the house with the garden tractor. It cuts the leaves into fine particles when gone over twice.

Chuckle, chuckle. I just re-read what I wrote... Bad day at work. Yes, engine speed, not PTO speed.

Yay, I am glad I did not fall on the floor in a panic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you can upload a few images of the business end of this beast I would appreciate
it as something is definetly off if you are using side slicers.

Post #15 has some pics Do you need something other than these? The mower is not on the tractor at the moment.

If you could put the mower over(turn turtle)-
DOWN side up and take a few images of the rotor
showing all the Knives and knive stations that would
be a big help.

I have the EFGC175 (Value Leader from Betsco) and really like it. Going on 4 years. Have used both the hammers and Y, don't know about mulching leaves as I don't have many, but this flail is very good on banana plants and palm fronds :) I have often wondered how the scoop blades would do on our grass.

I might try and figure out a way to do this without scratching it up, over the weekend.

How do you use the grass blades (Y) vs. the hammers (scoop)? Just trying to figure out the best usage for each. But neither type will work on leaves... I assume the hammers are for the larger brush but wonder where the dividing point in performance is between the two? I would think the hammers would not work well on grass.

Both types of knives work on grass and brush.

The issue is whether the steel is hardened and
how well it will hold a cutting edge as long as it
ground with a wet cool grinding method.

The scoop type knives do not give as nice a cut on
good sod as a high knive count finish rotor and side slicers/ Y blade pairs.

A true Hammer Knive for a flail mower is the type made and used for
forestry mowing and shredding stumps and limbs and woody brush
thick stem brush like grape vines.

Leonz: Attached are some photos. I picked the mower up on one side with the FEL. I did note a couple blades may be dinged up a bit, which I would not have expected with the very light usage it has seen just testing mulching leaves and sticks. And they are lighter weight than I expected. I was going to order a spare set of "Y" blades but think I will look around for something different. The hammers are much heavier and I will just have to see how they work out. Either way, I do not think the quality of the "Y" blades have anything to do with not mulching hardly any leaves at all.

I have your photo images,
and I want to thank you for sending them along.

You have a flail mower with four rows of wide
spaced knive stations.

The lack of shredding ability is due to the low number
of knives side slicers.

It is like stirring a big pot with a small wooden spoon-some
of the knves shred some of the leaves.

NOW as I see they have placed spacers inside the
knive mounting stations to hold the knive pairs in
place there is a fix for you.

You can install the side slicers that have a
sloted mounting hole.

This will require youto remove the spacers-the
removal of the spacers will permit the side slicer
knives to become airfoils/airplane wings to
create lift to then create suction under the
mower hood, and as a result increase the
suction at the ground level and pick up
the dry leaves and shred them to a greater extent.

They apparently have used a non hardened steel
which is indicated by the blunt trauma to the
cutting edges that they have ground into the steel
made into THIER side slicers.

NOW as far as the knive stations at both ends of the rotor;
if you decide to change out the original side slicers you
MUST only use one side slicer at the end knive stations
AND point the cutting edge inward to prevent the side
slicer from digging into the side weldment of the mower.

ONLY After measuring the replacement knives cutting
TOTAL length with the knive or knives in the resting position-
Meaning hanging down and then pushing the side slocer with
the cutting edge to the outside and lifting it from the bottom
to the HORIZONTAL to see if it contacts the side weldment.

IF IT DOES you can only use one replacement knive facing inward
with the one spacer holding the inward facing knive in place.

ONCE you see how it will fit you can install the others.

SAYING that I would call flailmaster and see about getting
a pair or two of sample 3 inch side slicers with the mounting
slots rather than the holes.

They have a small handfull of three inch slicers that will work.

The original equipment side slicers I have have the tapered airfoil wing which increases thje lifting ability of the side slicers to create suction.

I keep hoping they will start making their side slicers like this but I have not seen thier new catalog yet and when I asked about having them stamp and grind a gross of them they were not interested

I do not know why not as as these same side slicers will fit the fords, motts and other flail mowers perfectly and even though the side slicer has a tapered cutting edge the suction force will be greater increading the flaimowers slicing ability and reducing fuel use.

When you measure the knive length measure it with the knive in the vertical position ONLY to obtain the knives length NOT the total length.

Thank you so much Leonz for your time with this matter. After taking a look at the current blades, I was going to change them out sometime and it may as well be now. I will take a look at what Flailmaster has.

I may PM you with some questions before I commit to purchase anything. I understand the fitment issues you mention on the sides- simple clearance items. But am fuzzy about the slotted knives replacing my current non-slotted knives and creating a lifting effect, as my current knives are not mounted rigidly and are free to move on their axis.

generally, different blade can make very big different effect.

mower-blade-1.jpg529101_235955633211222_432063231_n.jpg

for example, the second blade in the first photo, it is small H blade, and the first blade in the second photo, it is also small blade. BUT, because of different material, the second one's price is double as the first. After testing and compare with both of them, the second blade is much better than the first one.

BUT, till now, now customer would like to buy the second blade, because of its price.

By the way, you can find your blade in the first photo.
