Ford 1920 clutch Help needed

Boy was the clutch rusty

The flywheel also had a lot of rust. I scraped it and then tried to sand it but it was too deeply pitted.
Took it to a machine shop and had it resurfaced.
The pilot bearing seemed to be OK but I replaced it.

Now for the throughout bearing.
This one is shot. You can feel the roughness as you spin it.
Not quite sure how I'm gonna get it out. But its gotta go.

Removed the assembly the throughout bearing is mounted on.
What a lot of rust. I sprayed it with WD-40
The spring is shot. I'll have to find one to replace it.

I still have to figure out how to remove bearing. I have a puller but I don't see it fitting on this.

As far as throw-out bearings go, the ones I messed with were replaced as a whole unit. No need to disassemble any further than your at.

Here are my choices for springs
The one on the right feels like the same tension buy is not the same gauge wire
The one on the left looks to be a slightly heavier gauge wire but the tension is much more than the old one in the middle.

I hope I don't have to order one from NH. Although I wonder if they might have them in stock??

There's no way I'm putting one in if it means tearing down the tractor again to replace a two dollar spring.
Any ideas anyone? Would a stiffer spring make a big change with the throughout bearing?

The parts diagram from NH shows the bearing pressed on the pipe like housing.
AND what do I do about all of the rust??

Hey mike, looking good !!! you almost reached the top, I reckon it's going to be downhill from here on. I think your tractor spent some less than quality time outside and did not get much use to rut like that, but no matter ... it's all surface rust. On the throw our bearing you might be able to press it our. I have used sort of home made pusher by using two pieces of unistrut, with two pieces of all thread ( a long threaded rod that you can cut to size needed). The whole thing looked like a rectangle. all thread could be shorten or elongated using a nut and washer on either side. I then used a 1 ton bottle jack and some lumber to push things out. same as vertical hyd press. you need a pipe same dia as the bearing holder and couple of blocks to grab the edge of the bearing. Once you set it up like that you can push the holder our of the bearing. About the rust , put a brush wheel on your side grinder if you have, wear some eye protection and a breathing mask and go to town, it should not take too much before you scrape off all the rust. I gotta come back to study your pics a bit later.

I got the bearing off and cleaned up the part it's mounted to.
What a difference!

I wonder if this tractor was in a flood. I didn't mention it but when I removed the outer covering around the 4wd shaft there was some water in the end where it goes into the front axle. That and the amount of rust in the clutch housing- and look at the clutch rust its a wonder the clutch was working at all.

I know Soundguy and others were talking about UTF fluid and someone mentioned that used hydraulic fluid could be used as a rust inhibitor- spraying it inside car doors. I'm thinking os wiping the inside of the clutch housing with it.

Any opinions on this?

I'm still worried about the spring on the throw-out bearing.
I guess I'll have to order one from NH.
Too bad I'd love to get this thing back together before I start forgetting where everything goes- HaHa.

Put the new clutch in and tightened up bolts to 25 lbs ft as per manual.
I also put medium (blue) loctite on the bolts. Hope thats OK?

Now I have to resolve the spring issue before doing anything else
other than cleaning up rust.
