I believe what you're referring to would be the air filter on some models.

gassers and disesels had different breathers.. some had wet some dry.. dry ones had an access door... wet models a vent...add to that the tin differences from the 64 and prior models to the 65 and later models... etc.

My Ford 2000 ('74) had a wet filter (oil bath) behind the removeable plastic grill.

I always wanted to know this as well.
Here is my uncles '68 4000. Originally it was a gas tractor but the owner converted it to diesel some years back.
Has the air cleaner sticking up out of the hood in front and also on the side of the hood drivers side-I'm confused??? Was there 2 air cleaners??
The two air cleaners?? is how this tractor came with the gas engine

1 air cleaner per tractor.. style depended on model, fuel type, and year.

the prior models had the oil bath back by the driver, thus the lil rectangular vent on them back there.. etc.

Soundguy I'm still confused. My uncles tractor has the filter sticking out of the front of the hood and also the round filter thing on the drivers side. Is one not a air filter? See the pic I posted. That is how it came new.

I see a mushroom style inlet breather cap up front, and a cover for a dry air cleaner filter access back of the hood.
are you saying it also has a dry air filter canister or oil bath air filter sump under the nose too? or is the dry air filter back of the hood it's only filter canister.
the mushroom cap is an inlet... not a filter per se...
