Wouldn’t the shaft seal if it were bad at the flywheel end fill the engine with hydraulic oil?

It could. I’m not that technical. The seal will look perfect, wore or degraded just enough for oil not to seal it as it should. And the shaft may be scored instead. Never know until you investigate my friend. I like the way you think, good luck sir

That’s the way. You can keep those pistons and springs till you need them. From what you said, the pump is fine after it’s primed. Good indicator that end is fine. But you never know and I’m just trying to help. Check everything in that circuit while you are there. O rings if involved. That thing has got to be exactly right to work
