Garage project

That's a fair question. All things being equal I'd rather have the doors in a gable end for several reasons. In my case it was necessary to open the side wall so I could match the front elevation of the attached garage across the pad.

The roof is architectural shingles to match the existing on the house.

I see you are in SC. I sometimes see here in Maine that people will have a metal roof and they put the doors under the drip edge. After a big snow storm they have a 4 foot by 28 foot pile of snow to get rid off.

That would drive me nuts.!!

Not a problem where you are.

I love a nice garage and that's just what you are about to recieve.

Shingles are on. One guy 10 hours hand nailed 12.5 squares plus drip edge and vent ridge cap, cleaned up and gone. Amazing!

Got the house wrap on today. Surprised that something that appears so simple and straight forward could be so difficult to do correctly. Having the wind wrap this stuff around you while on top of a 24' ladder just ain't no fun at all.

I know exactly what you mean....where did all that wind come from all of a sudden?? It had been still for days then poof. Wind!!
I built a scaffold to access the second floor, it would have blown me off the ladder......

What is more amazing is that is one steep roof!! 12.5 squares on a 4/12 would be a cake walk.....your roof would require several visits to the emergency room if I was doing it......I would spend more time running up and down the ladder to get my hammer than I would nailing shingles.

What is more amazing is that is one steep roof!! 12.5 squares on a 4/12 would be a cake walk.....your roof would require several visits to the emergency room if I was doing it......I would spend more time running up and down the ladder to get my hammer than I would nailing shingles.

Last year my roof got destroyed by Ike. My roofing crew showed up at 9am and had it torn off and new drip edge on by 11:30. They went to lunch and were back in 1/2 hour. By 1pm the shingles arrived and they had down the tar paper and ice ****. The 27 squares of architectural's were on my 2 story house, everything cleaned up, and they left with a check by 4pm. I could not believe it. They were a crew of 8. 6 men on the roof and 2 women on the ground. Women are very detail oriented and did a great job of clean up.

LOL That is just TOO COOL!

I doubt the strict guidelines set forth by the Architectural Committee (read Bride here) would approve of this mod permanently but it would almost be worthwhile to have for special occasions.

Thanks guys. It's about 3 months of every spare minute with probably 3 to go but I've enjoyed it. My friends and family have been a great help on the weekends. We've worked hard during the day and partied hard at night. There was a pretty rough looking crew a couple of those Sunday mornings but everyone kept plugging.

The OH door went in today and I got the personel door in tonight. 2 more windows and locksets for the door and she'll be secure.

I horse traded some laminate work for the use of an aluminum brake. I get my first (and only) lesson on bending trim Saturday. I think I'll start on the back of the garage first.........

Here's a couple of shots of the progress so far. She's closed in now except for the plastic over the upstairs windows.

This is how it sits on the site. Now maybe my "match the existing elevation" answers make more sense.

A little more framing and the circle tops will be ready to go in. The upstairs room is 18' wide inside the knee walls. Plenty of room for man cave stuff that's being evicted from the room above the existing garage. No more "don't be smoking no cigars up there" or would you PLEASE hold it down a little".

I'm green with envy over here! It looks like your tractor fits in the door with the ROPS up.. but what happens when you get a bigger tractor?

Also, Outlets.. I'd put 2x as many outlets in there while the wall's are still open. You never know when you will need an outlet and MORE is better!

What are you going to do with the upstiars? My wife is always talking about having her home office over a garage.. but I'm to... froogal ... to want to heat it?

Thanks Phill. I only maintain about 10 acres at home so I won't need a bigger tractor here.

I inherited a little farm in the mountains a with a Kubota L225 and a Ford 3000. If I make it to retirement there I'll probably sell one of them and buy a used heavy loader/backhoe.

I've got a home office crammed in the corner of a spare bedroom now. The Bride keeps everything neat so there's an ongoing conflict with me covering the bed and floor with blueprints and paperwork. I'm moving upstairs and we both win.

I did the math this afternoon and the garage is at 20k now. Add trim, siding, electrical completion, plumbing completion, insulation, beadboard, ceiling panels and a dual zone mini split HVAC unit and it's going to end up pretty close to the estimate of 30k.
