Garden time...Oh boy!

Jim, along with the primer bulb, the line came off at the gas tank and the fitting through the tank was held in place by the gas line. I ran it for a year with the primer bulb messed up but couldn't figure out how to keep fuel from leaking out of the tank and finally gave up. Good excuse to buy the Honda, I hope it serves me as well as the IDC did. Oh Jim, if you ever want to try out one of these Honda tillers, you and Kathy can come spend the weekend and I promise that you can try the tiller all you want!! (Tilling my garden-of course.) /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for the info Bill, I will eventually weaken and get her what she wants, just want to get the right unit.

I keep thinking that when I get my 49 Super A done I will put the cultivators on it, which would be pretty funny with our little garden /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Jim that's a neat little tiller.

2 years ago I got my wife one of those Mantis tillers. I don't know what it actually weighs but she can easily carry it to the garden and she uses it to till between the plants. I follow up with the Troy-Built Horse tilling between the rows and our system seems to work well for us. The Troy is a bit much for her to handle with the weight of the cast iron but it's no problem for me and they both do a nice job of cultivating.

Wish it would STOP raining so we could get our garden planted. It's now been 9 days of straight rain with more rain forcasted right through the weekend. When it finally quits i'll have to take a sickle to the grass. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Mike, I think Mantis was the one that set the standard for these small tillers many years ago. A mantis was the first one I used. I thought it was a toy until I tried one a friend had. After that when I saw my Ryobi, I couldn't resist. What I like about the Mantis and the Honda is that the engine sits right on top of the tines and gives a little extra mass to the tiller near the ground. The Mantis also has easily reversible tines for different digging conditions.

Last night I was in the garden doing some tilling between more rows. It's been dry here, but the ground is still moist down about 2-1/2" deep. My corn has 7 to 10 leaves. At about 15 leaves, watering will be critical up until 20 leaves on the stalk and full maturity of the plants. I'll have my soaker hoses in place this weekend and give everything a drink. When the temperatures get into the 90s, the plants use a lot of water.

The only plant with obvious bug damage right now is my okra. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I think it must be small grasshoppers doing the damage (light). A few plants have about 1/2 the leaves eaten away, but that's 5% or less. Everything else seems to be relatively bug free for now. Maybe I need to put a bird feeder in the garden to encourage birds and cut down on the young grasshopper population. With dry weather ahead, it will only get worse. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The squash race is on. I only have 4 plants. Picked the 1st 2 squash last Sat. Picked 6 more since then and the plants are loaded with more from small to ready. Gonna have to start giving them away already.
And you planted how many squash and zuchini plants? /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Ha! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Do we measure by number or most weight? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I picked my first squash last night. It was about 6" long and 2-1/2" in diameter. Many, many more are growing.

How many plants? Too darn many I guarantee! Too many peppers too. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
