I WOULD like to hear the end of the story if there is one.
Did you realize that you had filled with gas instead of diesel?

I do believe if you put gasoline in a diesel it would be disastrous. You can lock one up or blow it up just trying to start one with either in cold weather. Gasoline is a lot more volatile than diesel. I put diesel in a car years ago and that was a mess. Did not run right, engine missed, and tried to run hot. I enfed up draining the tank and putting in fresh gas. With the volatility of gasoline, I think if you put it in a diesel engine you would not have much of an engine. Cut this guy some slack.Come on buddy lets not go that route. If i happen to make a mistake i have no problem spitting it out. Im the only person that fills this tractor up.
The black smoke is the result of the engine being bogged down by what ever is causing the noise.
I would loosen the fan belt completely and start the engine for just a few seconds. If the noise disappears, then you KNOW that it is either the alt or water pump etc.
If the noise is still there it could be that the starter is not trowing out or there is a blockage in the hydraulic system.
Don't run the engine with the belt loose for more than several seconds.
I didn't see a final word on this so I thought I'd share my findings for the next guy. I had the exact same issue. Ran fine yesterday, smokes and screams and won't idle today. It was a bit disturbing, but after poking around I found a fresh mouse in the air filter canister. Took him out, problem gone. You can recreate the OPs symptoms be partially covering the inlet hose with your hand.
