( Me, I'm real uncomfortable & clumbsy with & cringe at the power loss & wasted $$$ of a hydraulic tranny. I'd rather save some money & get a good solid gear tranny that is easier for me to control. But, that is just me - I've been driving gear tractors since I was 7 on the farm, and prefer manual trannies )

I agree.. I can drive hydro based heavy equipment at work.. but am most at home with my old non-shuttle, 8n.. no live hyds, etc.. I can back into a stock pile with my rear scoop, raising as I back in.. let the tires dig a bit, clutch, shift to n, unclutch, let the scoop lift, and then clutch and shift into a forward gear in about 1.5 seconds.. all as a normal response. I'm afraid if I had a hydro.. my hands and feet would have nothing to do during that 1.5 seconds! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

seriously thought.. all my tractors are gear.. and I like it like that...

( Now, which part is overbuilt on your tractor model? Some the hyd pump is the big heavy part, & the engine will stall out before the hydro bypass goes. Some, the engine is the strongest link, & the hydro pump will bypass before the engine dies. This latter is more typical, and actually probably a better setup. We assume some of the engine power is going to the power steering, pto, etc. etc. So the engine is probably a bit stronger on most tractors than the hydro pump bypass setting. )

On tractors like the Kubota BX’s series where various HP engines all use the same hydro (as far as I know), are the hydro pump bypasses set to different values to match the different HP engines? If they are all set the same and the 15 HP version will lift the bypass then as far as power to the wheels goes nothing will be gained with the higher 18 & 22 HP versions. Correct? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Efficiency

Hydros have the lowest losses when operating at near peak pressure and low flow. So at low rpm with high driving load you loose the least power.

At high rpm at low pressures you lose the most.

Its all in the flow.

A rear scoop? Dig the wheels in? Clutch, shift, clutch shift, shift, clutch, etc., /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif 1.5 seconds? Your method is all yours. We can have a little race. I'll be using my loader as the scoop method is something I don't have or ever plan on getting. I'll give you a 1.5 second head start, no make that 3, better yet, how about six. I still have my money on me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I know it has all been beat to death......give me a shuttle/gear/powershift anyday. Anything but hydro. I know the good and the bad of both. If we want to compare this and that.......lets hook them both to a seemingly imoveable object...when the hydro bypasses, I'll grab another gear and continue on my way. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif You can MAKE a gear tractor do something. A hydro is at the mercy of the bypass valve.
Just harrassing you hydro guys.

Once the tires spin what else is there? Gravity enhancing pods? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No, but with all of the weight adding most people do to thier tractors...well traction isn't always an issue.

I am comparing apples to apples. I have used the same 2 tractors 1 in a hydro 1 in a gear drive. It's just a fact that gear drives are more efficient with their use of power. You do give up something with a hydro, you also gain something. Neither is right or wrong but tractor HP for tractor HP a gear will outdo a hydro.

I still own a manual tractor, drive shuttles routinely and very much enjoy my hydrostatic. You haven't told me (as well as others) anything I don't already know but have educated me a little more about yourself. There is nothing in my use that requires my hydrostatic drive tractor to be parked until my gear tractor is available. There is no point I hit where I need my hydrostatic to be "outdo'd by my gear tractor" I suppose if the transfer of energy was the end all be all of owning a tractor, a direct drive motor at the wheel would be the most efficient use of the power, not necessarily the most practical.

Some of us come from a farm background. We might use several thousand gallons of diesel fuel a year through our machines. At that scale, efficiency is a _very_ important part of the picture. (Check out what happened to the hydro tractors that were introduced in the '60s.) Efficiency is one of the first things to consider.

We understand it.

For the small 15 hp tractor used on weekends, comfort and a low learning curve are the important issues.

We understand that too.

I hope you can see both sides.

If the question was 'What is the most efficient tranny?' then, as most have said, a gear tranny is the answer.

You seem to be chasing a different question, which I do not understand, nor was asked.

I do understand that your tractor is best for you, & I don't think anyone has had any issue with that.

Why does it bother you that others choose something different? Why riddicule someone who enjoys using a rear scoop on his Ford N? What pleasure does that bring you?

I scoop manure from 40 head of cattle with an IHC H tractor, narrow front, no power steering, no live hyd, and a worn out pump that tuckers out on hot days. It works _for me_ & I get along fine. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone. But it's my choice, isn't it? Do you wish to riddicule me too?

Enjoy your machine, and enjoy life. Hostility doesn't get one far.
