I'll disagree on one small point.

The sheepdog's job and duty is to protect the flock. That's the police.

The armed citizen protects himself, family, etc. He becomes a fanged sheep that can fight a wolf and win.

That is a very good article. As an outsider I believe I have no say in what the people of the US decide about gun law - it has nothing to do with me, or anybody else who does not live there, but of course we have opinions. I am pro gun. Owned my first (an air pistol) aged about 7 or 8 and later bought a shotgun, then rimfire and centre fire rifles.

I grew up in Britain where even the police do not carry guns. They do here, and in Australia where I lived for 13 years, but I have, by choice, never lived in a country where I felt the need to carry a gun for protection. If I lived in the US, I am sure I would feel the need, and for my wife to carry too. That is a terrible shame, to feel you must have a gun for protection.

While "To Serve and Protect" is on most police cars, the Supreme Court ruled many years ago they have no duty to protect anyone, there are many articles on that.

Yep, officers I know state their firearm is for their own protection.

Hitting a nickel throw in the air? I'd have to see that to believe it unless using a judge or governor loaded with bird shot. Even that would be impressive.

My dad and one of my uncles could hit a quarter thrown in the air with a 22 open site rifle. It would top out about 25' or so before they would hit it. I tried it a few time but I might as well have done it blindfolded.

As for hitting coins in the air. I saw my dad do it with both revolver and rifle.

I practiced a few thousand times and was able to do it with hulled black walnuts thrown by myself with my left hand into the air and the rifle was a Crossman pellet rifle I had as a kid. I was about 14 or so. It took hundreds if not thousands of throws to hit the first one. After that I got better and better, and could hit more than 50 percent of the time. I am not saying I can do it now. I really don't know if I can or not, or how long it would take to get back in the groove. By the time I was 14, where we lived then it was not safe to fire actual firearms into the air. The hitting of 50 cent pieces and silver dollar with rifles and pistols by my father was done in a much more sparsely populated area when I was younger. So I have no actual practice hitting objects in the air with an actual firearm except a shotgun. I can sure do that. I have seen videos of many persons hitting small objects thrown into the air with pistols, rifles and even arrows.
