To have an ice buildup you gotta have precipitation. To get precipitation water has to evaporate. Water evaporates best when warmer.

Them ocean currents are all about temperature, salinity, prevailing wind on water surface and the eaths rotation.

Now add to that the continents move changing the currents as the earth rotates and pushing water to different places and you have a system that can never be predicted or accounted for in history. Even a few tenths of knot of current could change the worlds weather patterns, which mean no scientist could tell you what the climate or weather was past beyond that already recorded with any certainty beyond it was warm or cold.

I don't think plate tectonics manifests changes in the same time frame as any effects man has on environment. Given a sufficient range of time, you are right, the changing positions of the continents do matter but their motions are essentially static over the range of ages of ice cores. Consider intercontinental ballistic missile aiming. It takes many factors into account including Coriolis effect etc. but doesn't consider continental drift (plate tectonics.)

It goes to show how some will strain any fact or argument rather than face what is fairly obvious.

Kinda like at bedtime when past experience indicates that no matter how the child protests and caterwauls in fits of increased severity, the adult prevails and the child goes "nite nite."

Looked at the Ga Tech synopsis. First impression is less ice more snow just like lake effect snow around the Great Lakes. "They" claim the report is evidence for cold in Northern Hemisphere but don't elaborate or link to the actual report.Did the people writing synopsis get it correct. Did the people writing the report properly account for all the factors that will affect the observations they were taking? Lot of questions and no answers.

All I know is this is the first year that I have not been able to go ice fishing since I started over 40 yeras ago. No ice. I took my rowboat out for my 50th birthday the second week of February! :(

Meanwhile, places in Europe are having one of the harshest winters on record.

Call it what you want... global warming, climate change, etc.... there is good evidence that human activity is having effect on the climate in the short term. However, all it would take to offset that is a good blast by a large volcano to cool us right down again. Unless, of course, it releases all that gas frozen at the bottom of the oceans, then we'll all cook instead of freeze. Yes, in the long term of bilions of years it will be a blip on the radar of some alien archeologist in the long distant future when we are all gone. But we are here now.... at least through most of 2012 anyway! So I try to be semi-responsible with my environment.

Moss, what is known that instead of fishing for ice you can make it in your fridge freezer. Oh, remember to put warm water in the ice cube trays for freezing!

And for sustained heavy production use a conveyor belt made out of the stuff the "magic" conveyor was made of that kept the plane from taking off.

The oil companies are banding together to get their Fracking practices exempt from reporting what they are putting into the ground, and possibly your ground water, they want Just the scientists to decide, not public opinion.
