First, congratulations, Garry! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Second, it sounds like you have a plan for retirement. My father did not. He didn't think he'd make it to retirement, but he did. Perhaps this is more advice to the TBNers who have not retired...plan what you want to do. Golf, travel, public or volunteer service, etc. The routine my dad had for over 40 years was gone 'overnight' and he had nothing to replace it with. He went through a rough time the first couple of months.

Great to hear your gonna have some free time on your hands. I know of a place that you could spend some time on a tractor moving dirt and taking out trees. If you ask really nice, you might even be able to build a lake!!!!!

Seriously, congratulations.

If you make it to Southeastern Michigan in your travels. Stop by. We have a golf course in walking distance from our place. But I will let you use our Golf Cart to get there. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey ! Good for you ! A word of advice if I may . I try to always have something torn apart in the shop in case the wife wants me to do some honey do job . Having your hands greasy and talking to your self also helps . Most times, I can then sneak out the back of the shop ,around the corner and head over to the gun club . Always have a backup plan in case you get caught and practice saying it in front of a mirror until you can do it with a straight face .

Good advice, Mike. For those who have not planned their retirement, it really is something you need to think about. Many, if not most, of us have things we want to do when we retire, but I've known several people for whom the job was "who they were" and they were lost without that job. One of my dad's best friends worked as a bookkeeper (didn't call'em accountants way back there) at the same job for over 65 years; right up until they took the keys to the place away from him (he was always the first to arrive so he had always unlocked the doors). He was lost without that job to go to and he just didn't have any other interests.

Gary, Congratulations. I bet you have all sorts of nostalgic memories filling your head about now. I almost know how you feel. A few more months and I will also be retiring with 31 years. Hope you will be able to do all the things you have been dreaming of doing. Are you still planning on getting a tractor, if so have you narrowed you search since your first post- see below?

<font color="blue">"Hi guys! I started checking out TBN about a week ago, and am I IMPRESSED . I'm starting my search for my toy, and I think I've seen every question I've ever had about tractors answered through these threads. You guys really know your stuff. And it's great the way everybody shares info. I hope I'll be able to contribute as time goes by.

I'll be looking for a 30 - 40 hp tractor. At this point in time, I haven't developed any prejudices one way or the other, but I'm open to suggestions! Within a 20 minute drive, I have a JD, NH, and Kubota dealer. I've visited all of them at least once, but since I really didn't know what to ask, I can't really say whether one is better than another. But like most of you have said, visiting and talking is half the fun. I'll keep reading and visiting TBN. I look forward to getting to know you all a whole lot better!"

Thanks to all for the nice words and the well wishes.

It was a very nice day, and a nice way to end it. I got a big surprise when I got home to find a brand new set of golf clubs (REALLY nice clubs!) my wife got me for my retirement. Guess she doesn't want me to do anything on her honey-do list! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

txdon - I can't believe you pulled up my first post! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Yes, I still plan on getting my tractor. Once we're ready to come back here after our travels, we'll be able to live in the motorhome while we build our"barn" with the upstairs living area, so I'll get my tractor when we come back to use on all of those kinds of projects. This is actually the wife's plan, so I'm not arguing! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Again, thanks guys for all the nice words. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I'm looking forward to our future adventures, and TBN will continue to be a big part of it all!

And all of you that made an offer of golf...........

..........well, let's just say that I know how to get in touch with you! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

With your retirement, who is going to contribute to my Social Security Check????????? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I sure hope that you are going to have a good time at my expense!!!!!! Go ahead and enjoy yourself, playing golf, traveling around the country with that gas guzzling motor home, staying at fancy hotels and eating delicious food that is going to make your waist line burst at the seams and drive your cholesterol level sky high. When you are in the neighborhood, stop in and I will give you a drink of water..... probably all that I will be able to afford now that you are retiring and no longer contributing to the Social Insecurity System... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'm going to try real hard! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Now Junk, why would I want to stay in fancy hotels when I'll have my luxurious motorhome to stay in? And by the way, it'll be a diesel guzzling motorhome, NOT a gas guzzling one. If I can't have my tractor right now, at least I can smell the exhaust from something similar! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

And as far as my waistline is concerned, well, let's just say that I'm already an expert on that particular problem. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Sorry about the social security thing, but I needed to take advantage of it too!

Oh and by the way. I really DO appreciate your own unique way of saying congratulations. I would have felt cheated if I hadn't received one of your special posts! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

To stay on track....Junkman, I'm still laughing from your post..... congrats again Garry! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Gary congrats on the retirement. My last day of work was 10/6/2003 i remember the best part was going home that day, and thinking i never have to get up to go to work. I have not been bored 1 bit. You will love the freedom.!!!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif as an example, take today very hot and humid, so i went garage saleing this AM then came home and am able to sit in AIR CONDITIONED computer rm, instead of working on a broken machine in a plant that would probably reach 100 deg today. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif Enjoy yourself.

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( what does the capital R in GarRy stand for?!! )</font>

/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gifBecause his name is Garry; not Gary. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif But you know how us humans "see" what we're looking for or expect to see, so instead of using the correct "Garry", we'll use "Gary". So with a name like mine, some decide it's "Bert", some think it should be "Byrd", and I regularly get junk mail, especially from American Express and Citibank wanting to give a credit card to "Ms. Bird . . .". /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Congratulations on your retirement, Garry. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Now, I'm looking forward to hearing about all your cross country travels and adventures and then that tractor you'll soon be buying.

Did you sell your house yet? How do we keep in touch with you when you and Jenny are on the road?

Congrats Garry, like the advice of a place to go. Every guy should have a shop of some shape or size. If you get bored around the 2nd of March it's sugaring season in Vermont. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif All the free syrup you can sample.
Congrats and enjoy!!

Spiffy,

Well, the REAL explanation is that my first name is Garrett, but I've always gone by Garry. But I changed the second r to the big R for 2 reasons. First, there was on of our members who was having a problem with people misspelling his name. Kind of like what Bird is talking about. He made the r in his name large so that people would notice it. Since I was frequently experiencing the same problem with people spelling my name with 1 r, I thought I'd do it too. I wanted to do it to show him I supported his change, but also to see how long it took for someone to notice it.

Don - I like your explanation of what the big R stands for! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif And no, I didn't sleep until noon. In fact, I actually got up earlier than usual to watch the British Open. Of course, I took a nap later! /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Bob - Good to hear from you! No, we've not sold the house yet. We have a couple of good prospects, but nothing official yet. Keep your fingers crossed for us.

We'll be setting up an on line journal to document our travels. I imagine that most of our contacts will be through that. But I'll also be available through TBN of course. Once we have all the details worked out, I'll post the information. I actually have a computer wizard coming over later this week to discuss our plans and what we'll need to do.

Alan - as much as I learned just how good your Vewrmont syrup is when we were out there, I think this next March we'll be in a somewhat warmer location for awhile! Maybe we'll be visiting Eddie Walker then! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif But thanks for the invite! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
