It's starting out at 78 F here and going to 98 F by afternoon. I guess I should feel lucky it won't top 100 F, but that's coming this weekend when my two grandkids are coming to visit from Oklahoma.
Roy: Dang! You are the king of contract/temporary work, but I'd hoped you finally found a place to hang your hat for a long while. It makes sense that they might ramp back up and have a recall in October. They need to make cast iron air conditioners to stay in full production all year long.
Drew: Good luck with the motorhome. I'm sorry to hear your garden is going downhill because of rain. Also, it's none of my business, but I'm curious how one handles home health visits when you are in a motorhome? In my opinion, craigslist always seems to have a bunch of motorized wheelchairs. They are far too cheap to try and motorize a standard wheelchair. It seems people get their chairs paid for by insurance or Medicare and don't have a lot invested, so they price them cheaply.
I posted earlier in the week about making yellow squash and zucchini pickles. Yesterday, I put a pint into the refrigerator and tried them last night for dinner. It was a jar with part yellow and part zucchini mixed. They were both terrific. Sweet & sour just as you'd expect bread & butter pickles to be. They had a nice firm crunch too.
Edit: Don, my garden is suffering in the heat, but my tomato plants got beat up when we had heavy rains. There's still the early girls making small tomatoes and I picked 1-1/2 gal of small cherry tomatoes two days ago. Tomorrow, they will be ready to pick again. I think my 40% shade cloth is a big success. I'll probably also get a bucket of blackeyed peas if I can walk between the rows. It's a pea jungle in there. My squash is still going strong because I flood water it daily with soaker hoses and it's so big it provides lots of shade for the ground. Of course, my okra is loving this weather and not even wilting because I water it too. I'm sorry you are having so many problems. I have to think that your lack of rain this year never really got enough deep water to let the plants get good roots. Now, they can't take up enough water to counter the burning sun.
